Accessible everyday travel in Hong Kong: transport, concessions and facilities
Plan Rehabus, wheelchair vehicles, MTR lifts, JoyYou and student concessions, public venues and babycare facilities around the actual journey.
Start with the task you are preparing for and work through the next steps.
Start with these three stages
An accessible journey joins the home entrance, station, vehicle and destination. A wheelchair symbol alone leaves vehicle dimensions, pick-up space, accompanying carers and booking conditions unanswered. These guides provide specific enquiry and application routes, while treating mobility needs, student concessions and babycare facilities individually. Check availability for the date and time you intend to travel. A listed facility does not establish that every entrance or every part of the journey offers the same access.
Describe wheelchair dimensions, ability to transfer to a seat, companion numbers and the two addresses. Ask the relevant operator about eligibility, vehicle type and booking channels. Rehabus, accessible hire cars and taxis have separate arrangements. Distinguish a booking request from confirmation and from the vehicle actually arriving. Plan a usable alternative in case the connection or equipment cannot meet the need.
Check identity, card type, application and route rules for each concession. Current JoyYou arrangements do not make every eligible trip a flat two dollars, and student concessions have eligibility and validity conditions. For MTR, check the actual entrance and lift status. Guide-dog journeys require the operator's applicable arrangements. A parking permit likewise does not establish that a suitable space is available at every destination.
Before visiting a public venue or family activity, confirm accessible entrances, toilets, babycare rooms and operating hours with the venue, and share the meeting point with companions. Allow rest and the return journey. Under changing weather, read that day's operating notices. Save confirmed details offline and ask where to contact staff when assistance is required, so the plan remains understandable during a phone or network problem.
