When two wheelchair users travel together or a passenger stays in their chair, check capacity and dimensions before booking HKSR's Accessible Hire Car.
What to have ready
Before you start
HKSR's Accessible Hire Car serves wheelchair users and their companions. Wheelchair users holding HKID can register free membership and request trips up to three calendar months ahead. The provider lists transport hours of 7 am to 11 pm, with office hours of 9 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays excluding public holidays. Booking channels include 8106 6616, ecRide and RiderWeb. Its listed passenger combinations are one wheelchair user plus five companions, or two wheelchair users plus two companions. Use the actual group composition when comparing vehicles, rather than the number of seats in an ordinary private car.
What to do, step by step
- Measure the chair in travelling configuration, including footrests, headrest and occupied height. The provider lists front-space limits of 1020 by 690 mm and 1325 mm occupied height, and rear-space limits of 1070 by 690 mm and 1390 mm height, with a 200 kg maximum load. Send your measurements for a fit check before selecting the vehicle.
- Complete membership first, then describe each leg, passenger count, chairs and pickup entrance. Declare luggage and equipment rather than assuming spare wheelchair capacity covers them. Distinguish required arrival time from the acceptable pickup window. Save the operator's response and order reference, and ensure the person answering the driver's call knows the exact building entrance.
- Read the member single-trip table by origin and destination region. The schedule effective 1 April 2025 has four regions, placing the airport, HZMB Hong Kong Port and Heung Yuen Wai in Region 4. Published fares include tunnel tolls but exclude parking. Ask the operator to confirm the applicable regions, separately charged return and any parking before comparing the complete cost.
- For a change or cancellation, contact the office within its stated hours. The current table allows free notification at least one working day before service; same-day changes, absence or lateness beyond ten minutes attract the listed HK$210 per-trip charge. Count working days carefully for a Monday journey. Obtain confirmation and recheck the meeting point and contact number before departure.
Costs, timing, and things to check
The charging page lists online payment through ecRide or cash and Octopus at the destination. Free membership does not make the journey free, and accepting urgent requests does not establish availability. Confirm chair securement, passenger restraint and the assistance needed. Arrange a companion for care tasks that have not been agreed as part of the driver's service, and keep payment and confirmation details accessible to that person.
The service terms state there is no compensation mechanism for an unsuccessful service or pickup delay. For a critical appointment or departure, allow a workable margin and identify a backup that can carry the same chair. Subsidy eligibility and approval require separate checking. When comparing prices, retain the full quoted amount until any assistance is actually approved rather than subtracting a hoped-for grant.
A practical example
Two wheelchair users and one carer travelling from Sha Tin to a Kowloon clinic can request the two-chair configuration. They send both sets of measurements and ask which chair fits each space. Next they confirm the Region 3 to Region 2 outward charge, return charge and parking. Since consultation duration may vary, they clarify the change procedure before choosing the return time. The carer keeps both order references and the hospital's pickup entrance, so a later timing enquiry describes a specific confirmed journey.
Confirm the occupied chair fits, then check the complete cost and booking.
