An accessibility symbol still leaves questions about the entrance and equipment you need. Use LCSD's venue contacts to obtain specific answers before attending.
What to have ready
Before you start
LCSD describes barrier-free access at its major sports facilities, with older sites subject to the practical constraints of improvement works. Its FAQ identifies features such as accessible toilets, parking, tactile guidance and family changing rooms, and says some pools have lifts for getting in and out of the water. The Access Co-ordinators and Access Officers directory provides a venue-specific enquiry route. Translate a general symbol into the action you need to complete: entering, reaching the activity floor, changing, using a toilet or entering a pool. Those questions can be checked before paying or arranging transport.
What to do, step by step
- Find the full venue name and exact activity area, then use the directory for the relevant officer. Provide the date, pool, room or seating area, whether the person stays in their chair and the assistance sought. Replace a broad question such as 'suitable for older people?' with the barrier that matters, so the reply can address distance, steps, hearing support or changing arrangements.
- Ask for the usable entrance, drop-off point and route to the activity floor and toilet. Check operating arrangements for lifts, gates and equipment, including works or session restrictions. Keep a map or written directions for the companion. For a larger chair, supply its measurements and ask about the necessary doorway and turning space rather than relying solely on a standard wheelchair-accessible label.
- For swimming, ask about the lift or ramp, the particular pool it serves and the path from changing room to poolside. LCSD's examples include ramps at secondary or training pools in Siu Sai Wan, Kwun Tong and Tuen Mun North West, which does not establish identical access to every main pool. Ask about staff assistance and timing, and agree who handles personal transfer and changing care.
- Before enrolment or hire, check admission, companion arrangements, concession evidence and equipment separately. A disability-designated programme has its own proof requirements; a physical access route does not enrol anyone in it. Save the agreed arrangement and arrive with time to speak to staff. If equipment is unavailable, ask about a safe alternative instead of attempting an unsuitable transfer simply to preserve the booked session.
Costs, timing, and things to check
LCSD has concessions for people with disabilities and one accompanying carer, subject to the applicable hire or programme rules. Designated programmes require recognised proof, including original verification on the first day. Organisational free-use and priority-booking schemes should be checked under their own eligibility. Keep the activity name and booking record in the enquiry so the officer can distinguish a personal visit from an organisation's application.
A facilities listing may not reflect a temporary fault. Recheck closure or maintenance on the day and retain the agreed contact. For visual or hearing needs, ask about tactile routes, captioning, induction support or a suitable way to communicate. With the traveller's agreement, describe the support they want from a companion and from staff, avoiding an assumed promise of unlimited personal care.
A practical example
A wheelchair user considering swimming asks which pool has the lift, how to reach the family changing room and whether the intended session can accommodate assistance. Her carer handles personal changing while staff confirm equipment arrangements. She separately checks programme places and evidence. If the lift serves a different pool from the course, she asks the organiser to resolve that mismatch before enrolment. The eventual booking therefore covers the actual activity and route, rather than a facility elsewhere within the same building.
Ask about the actual action needed and connect entrance, equipment and assistance in one arrangement.
