A student card does not automatically change an Octopus fare. Handle the school, Octopus type and Student Status validity together for 2026/27.
What to have ready
Before you start
MTR's 2026/27 scheme generally covers students aged 12 to 25 in recognised Hong Kong full-time day courses, normally at least 20 teaching hours weekly for 30 weeks in an academic year. An application can start at age 11 for use from age 12. The concession requires a photo Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus with valid Student Status. Identify the course, age on submission and existing card before starting. For a family, keeping those details beside the school's verification instructions prevents a student identity card from being mistaken for completed transport eligibility.
What to do, step by step
- Ask whether the school participates in online applications. If it does, enter through MTR's 2026/27 page, choose new application or renewal and supply the requested student proof and photograph. Use the student's own name and card details. For a school outside the online arrangement, follow the paper route. Resolve an unfamiliar field with the school or MTR before paying or submitting an inaccurate declaration.
- For a new photo physical Octopus, the paper route currently lists HK$90: HK$50 deposit, HK$20 MTR administration and HK$20 Octopus service charge. Existing-card or renewal activation has a HK$20 administration fee. Submit the paper form within 14 days of the school chop at an accepting Customer Service Centre. Keep the receipt and confirm which centres handle that application rather than selecting a station only for convenience.
- Inspect the current Student Status expiry. Renewal can start 60 days before expiry; a status expiring on 31 October 2026 without renewal results in adult fare deductions afterwards. Validity varies by class, so check the encoded status rather than another student's deadline. School transfer or cessation of full-time study also needs the relevant update. Maintain a reminder based on the student's actual record.
- After approval, complete the instructed activation or renewal. For an existing physical card, the instructions allow the Octopus App or an appropriate Customer Service Centre; Personalised Mobile Octopus uses the app. Follow the delivery letter for a new card. Before the first trip, check active status and available value. Payment confirmation or school approval is an intermediate record, so verify the card update itself before relying on the concession.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Students aged 12 or above pay adult fares with single-journey tickets or QR codes. The MTR concession excludes Airport Express, MTR Feeder Bus, Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau journeys and East Rail First Class; other operators have their own rules. Compare the student's actual commute rather than assuming every bus or railway journey is discounted. During processing, retain a realistic fare budget using the payment method available that day.
Check excluded card types, including a disability-status Octopus or a name-only personalised card without a photograph. Ask about the proper card route before attempting activation. Keep loss reporting separate from school renewal: if the card is lost, report it through Octopus and ask how replacement affects services. A repeated student application alone does not address use of the missing card.
A practical example
A university student sees that her photo Octopus status expires on 31 October. In early October she renews through her participating school, saves the reference and, after approval, completes activation and the HK$20 administration fee. She checks the new validity before commuting. On a weekend journey using a QR code, her student identity card does not create the same Octopus concession. For the connecting bus she checks that operator's own rule, keeping both parts of the journey in her budget.
Finish school verification and card activation, then use the concession within its validity and route rules.
