Daily travel spending and collected subsidy are separate steps. Know which account records the journeys and when the previous month's subsidy becomes available.
What to have ready
Before you start
From 1 June 2025, the monthly threshold became HK$500. The subsidy is one third of qualifying public transport expenditure above HK$500, capped at HK$400 per month for each Octopus and AlipayHK account. The threshold also appears in the Transport and Logistics Bureau's 2026 budget information, checked for this article on 2 October 2026. It depends on eligible expenditure recorded through the relevant account; shopping, parking and every kind of travel payment should not be added indiscriminately.
What to do, step by step
- Check recorded monthly expenditure through the official enquiry channels or payment service. Confirm that the transport service and payment method qualify; a bank statement's total deductions do not establish eligible spending.
- Review separate Octopus cards and accounts separately. Do not combine HK$300 on one account with HK$300 on another into an assumed HK$600 assessment, or expect the same payment to generate two subsidies.
- The preceding month's subsidy is available from the 16th of each month, with a three-month collection period. Use the current collection route for Octopus or AlipayHK and confirm that collection has actually completed.
- For missing expenditure, replacement cards or account problems, retain transaction dates, the operator and payment evidence, then contact the relevant official service. Do not give strangers full account credentials to recover a subsidy.
Costs, timing, and things to check
HK$400 is a ceiling, not a fixed award. With HK$800 of eligible monthly spending, the formula gives one third of the HK$300 above the threshold: HK$100. Reaching the maximum requires sufficient qualifying expenditure.
Before changing payment tools, check existing subsidy records and collection arrangements. A monthly reminder gives time to resolve card or account faults and avoids treating an expired earlier amount as still available.
A practical example
For HK$800 of qualifying June spending, collect the calculated subsidy from 16 July. An availability notification or screenshot is useful evidence, but it does not by itself show that the collection step credited the balance.
Check qualifying spending by account, collect after the 16th and verify the credit.
