This chapter covers domestic China Railway connections. Read both complete station names before comparing times: same-city eligibility is a ticket definition, not proof that the stations share a building.
What to have ready
Separate the ticket definition from the transfer route
12306 defines connecting tickets as usable successive segments whose arrival and onward departure stations may be the same station or stations in the same city. A connection displayed under Guangzhou or Shenzhen therefore needs more than a city-name check. Put the complete station names side by side: an added south, north, east or west may require leaving the building and taking metro or road transport. Even within one station, you must move from the arriving platform to the next train's designated waiting and checking point; platform access should not be assumed. Use official signs and staff guidance to establish the transfer passage, lift availability and any repeat security check, then assess the route against your walking speed and luggage handling.
Build a buffer that fits your party
The official connection feature asks travellers to consider transfer factors and accept risks caused by themselves or third parties. The shortest interval that an interface permits is consequently not a guarantee for every passenger. Allow for alighting crowds, a toilet stop, moving bags, locating the next gate and checking that closes before departure; children, older travellers or manual document checks can need more margin. For a station change, include leaving the building, reaching the pickup point, waiting, travel and entering the second station, rather than only the map's driving time between them. If the onward train is the last acceptable departure, consider an earlier first segment or an overnight fallback. Do not regard the entire journey as confirmed until every required segment is issued.
Handle railway disruption with both ticket records
When the first train is delayed, consult the official on-time query, which expressly treats its results as reference information and gives station announcements priority. If railway delay or cancellation affects the connection, show staff both ticket records instead of assuming every onward segment will automatically be refunded. Current rules provide joint-refund arrangements for eligible connecting tickets bought before disruption announcements, with different timing and conditions for delays and cancellations; processing tickets separately can invoke ordinary rules. Keep both orders, the announcement and useful contact details so the railway can identify the affected journey and available adjustment or refund route. A connection missed through a meal stop, traffic or choosing the wrong station should not automatically be treated as the same railway-caused event.
Worked example: both tickets say Guangzhou, but not the same station
A traveller has two domestic segments, arriving at Guangzhou South but leaving from Guangzhou East. They write the complete names in the itinerary instead of only Guangzhou transfer, consult official metro or station transport information and include the full station change plus the second ticket check. If the plan depends on running throughout or leaves no traffic margin, they compare a same-station connection or later onward train without promising seats before confirmation. With companions carrying separate bags, they establish a meeting position so the party does not scatter after alighting. If the first train is officially delayed, they promptly show the railway both already-purchased tickets and ask about the affected connection. A personal shopping delay instead follows the ordinary ticket-change chapter.
Connecting-ticket eligibility is not a transfer guarantee; keep full station names, a realistic route and both ticket records.
