After missing a train at Guangzhou South, check official 12306 or a counter before abandoning the old ticket. A change, refund and fare difference are different outcomes that need separate confirmation.
What to have ready
Before you start
For regular mainland domestic tickets, current 12306 guidance allows one eligible change after departure and before midnight that day, subject to capacity. Changing to another train that same day has no change fee; moving to the following day or a later date within the booking period incurs a change fee of 40% of the lower original or replacement ticket price. Fare differences and any refund fee on a reduced fare are separate. Check actual availability and ticket type: points tickets and other special arrangements differ. Hong Kong West Kowloon cross-boundary tickets require their specific rules.
What to do, step by step
- Record the train, exact departure station and time immediately and check whether it has left. Follow station staff directions rather than attempting to enter a closed gate or restricted boarding area.
- Inspect eligible departures through the original 12306 order or official counter. Ask about counter handling for cash purchases or a transaction the app cannot process instead of repeatedly creating replacement orders.
- Check replacement date, stations, class, fare difference and charges. Complete the required payment or confirmation and verify the issued new ticket; a search result or unpaid change request does not establish travel.
- Once the replacement is confirmed, update the hotel and onward transport and handle connecting tickets individually. If no suitable train exists, check viable overnight accommodation and alternative transport before making further commitments.
Costs, timing, and things to check
A change does not guarantee later refund eligibility, and post-departure handling differs from before departure. Use current options instead of an older 2015 FAQ's timing, particularly when deciding whether to move the trip to another date.
Until the ticket is confirmed, an agent saying it was secured should not become the basis for a hotel or cross-border connection. Keep the actual issued ticket and give each dependent booking its own cancellation review.
A practical example
A traveller misses a domestic departure from Foshan West to Guangzhou South and finds a later train that day. The original order's change and fare information is checked and the replacement confirmed. The traveller then assesses the separate West Kowloon connection, including transfer and clearance time. A successful change of the domestic leg neither changes the Hong Kong ticket nor establishes that the connection remains feasible.
Check changes against the original ticket, obtain a confirmed replacement and then adjust each connection.
