Find the original order and purchase channel when plans change. Successful cancellation, a refunded payment and a replacement booking are different states.
What to have ready
Before you start
MTR's current cross-boundary refund page gives a cutoff thirty minutes before departure for Hong Kong-origin trains. Mainland-origin departures follow individual-station arrangements, and agents may impose earlier cutoffs. The published table lists different refund bands, including ninety-five, seventy and fifty percent for unused or unaltered tickets according to lead time. These are cross-boundary terms, not a substitute for domestic connecting-ticket conditions; altered or special tickets need their own check.
What to do, step by step
- Open the original platform and order, selecting the affected passengers and checking adult, child and partial journeys. Cancelling an adult ticket does not automatically establish cancellation of children, return or separate orders.
- Read the ticket's current conditions, distinguishing Hong Kong departure, mainland departure, agent and altered bookings. For a new date, check availability and the alteration process rather than reusing an old QR code.
- Handle a Guangzhou South or other domestic connection in its own order. Notify hotels, tours and transfers separately and confirm charges; one cancelled train does not cancel the complete trip.
- Retain the successful acknowledgement, refund amount and original payment details and monitor receipt. A station refund by a representative requires passenger and representative identification and the order number under the official rules.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Service suspension or disruption differs from voluntary cancellation, so follow the affected-train notice. For illness-related mid-journey alighting, the train captain's passenger record may be needed; ask before leaving.
Funds may return through the original payment route separately from the cancellation time. Verify offers to bypass deadlines, substitute another traveller's documents or guarantee full refunds for a fee through the official platform.
A practical example
Two tickets cover Hong Kong–Guangzhou South and onward Zhongshan. Changing the weekend requires handling both and rechecking the connection. Refunding the first leaves the second subject to its own deadlines and charges.
Handle each ticket through its channel and confirm cancellation, payment return and replacement separately.
