MTR's destination information effective from 27 September 2026 includes Guangzhou South, East, Xintang and other distinct stations. South is in Panyu; East fits a different Tianhe approach; Xintang is another area again. Do not use 'Guangzhou station' as a generic label. Use the Guangzhou Metro service linked by MTR to plan onward travel and locate the actual hotel entrance, especially in old-city lanes or a large mixed-use complex.
What to do, step by step
- Choose Liwan, Yuexiu or Tianhe as a base and compare door-to-door routes from South and East. Include luggage, metro transfers and the walk after exiting rather than comparing train minutes alone.
- Search official ticketing for your date, available services, terminal and calling points, using exact names on the return. A hotel near East does not guarantee a direct ticket at your preferred time.
- Save the hotel's Chinese address and exit instructions, choosing metro or an authorised taxi route. For groups, older travellers or substantial luggage, compare the practical convenience and cost of fewer transfers.
- Use the same document registered on the ticket and allow time for West Kowloon procedures. On return, reach the correct Guangzhou station with room for security, waiting and luggage collection from the hotel.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Metro and national-rail facilities can involve several levels and lengthy corridors. Agree a meeting point and do not assume adjacent station labels mean a few minutes' luggage transfer.
Do not apply an older through-train routine to today's West Kowloon high-speed process. Passport and permit users may face different verification, so check every traveller and the final connection for an evening arrival.
A practical example
For a Tianhe stay with a Shamian half-day, compare East arrival and the cross-city outing. If South's train fits better, allow the longer city connection and keep the first evening light instead of rushing through two districts.
