Waiting near Rua do Cunha for a peninsula-bound bus involves more than recognising the route number. The stop direction and the payment product both matter. A wallet that works in a shop may still need its Macao ride-code service activated before boarding.
What to have ready
Separate the visitor fare from local discounts
DSAT lists a normal MOP6 fare and MGTO states that cash buses give no change. Approved stored-value cards and qualifying local financial-institution ride codes have their own discount rules. The specified Hong Kong or mainland Alipay and WeChat products, and UnionPay ride codes linked to non-local cards, charge MOP6 without fare or transfer discounts. Your friend's local-card charge therefore does not establish the price for your Hong Kong wallet. Prepare coins before joining the queue and read your own product's fare description.
Activate the ride code, then check companion support
Open the official app's Macao public-bus service and check the region, funding source and activation result. A merchant-payment QR is not the ride code. DSAT records companion-code additions to Hong Kong and mainland WeChat and Alipay during 2026; check your version's supported passenger count and instructions on screen. Select the group size before boarding and include every companion in valid payment. Do not assume an ordinary code can be scanned indefinitely for a whole family. Keep exact cash available if mobile data or the reader fails.
Match the stop and direction to the actual destination
Save the hotel's Chinese name, street and destination, then compare DSAT route information with the stop sign. Portas do Cerco, Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, Taipa Ferry Terminal and the bridge's Macao Port are different destinations. The reverse-direction stop is not necessarily directly opposite. Watch announcements and prepare to alight early, keeping the aisle clear around children or luggage. If a crowded bus cannot accommodate the group safely, wait or select suitable alternative transport rather than relying on a timetable estimate to force the connection. During a diversion, recheck temporary stop signs and official notices; a saved screenshot may show a boarding point that is no longer served.
Worked example: returning from Taipa as a family
Two adults and a child finish lunch in Taipa and return to a peninsula hotel. They first identify the hotel-side stop and the final walk, then confirm the boarding direction. Their Hong Kong WeChat ride code works, but they have not checked companion mode, so they prepare separate cash and ask the driver about the applicable arrangement before paying. For the next journey they verify the return stop independently. Keep the last walk in the plan: a correct bus ride still does not deliver everyone directly to reception.
Prepare exact visitor cash and verify the ride-code region, companion count and stop direction.
