The LRT links useful locations including the airport, Taipa Ferry Terminal, Cotai and Barra, but it does not deliver every visitor to a peninsula attraction. Map the destination and station exit first. A train serving Hengqin is also a transport connection, with separate immigration requirements.
What to have ready
Keep the token and use the right purchase point
Ordinary single journeys use a token purchased at a ticket machine or customer service centre. The operator distinguishes machine payment in MOP cash or LRT Card from the counter's credit-card and specified electronic options. Acceptance of a wallet brand does not ensure every overseas account can complete a payment. Select the destination before purchasing and keep the token for exit. If the gate rejects it or the token is lost, approach staff rather than following another passenger through. Ask before buying a stored-value card if you only plan one ride.
Understand Lotus, Union Hospital and Barra
The official network separates the Taipa, Seac Pai Van and Hengqin lines. The Hengqin Line connects with the Taipa Line at Lotus, while the Seac Pai Van Line serves Union Hospital and Seac Pai Van. Barra is the peninsula-side station; Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul's still require an onward journey. Follow the station's interchange signs instead of treating Lotus and Hengqin as one stop. With a wheelchair, stroller or large cases, ask about lifts and practical assistance before choosing a transfer solely from the map.
Check counted fare sections and your own last departure
The fare calculation adds a counted station for each sea-crossing section between Barra and Ocean, or Lotus and Hengqin, so visual platform counting can mislead. The route page identifies departure schedules updated in September 2026: check the travel date, direction and boarding station rather than using a terminal's final train as your local departure. Published ticket rules also include a general sixty-minute paid-area limit and overtime arrangements. If you plan extended photography or experience disruption, ask staff how the rules apply before remaining inside the paid area.
Worked example: airport to Barra, then a walk
A visitor travels from Airport to Barra, buys a token using a counter-supported method and checks the train direction. At Barra they pause before visiting nearby sites or taking an onward connection to the old centre. For the return, they allow time for that connection, station entry and their actual last departure. They consider the Hengqin Line for the next day only after checking documents for both jurisdictions. A destination appearing on the LRT diagram does not establish permission to cross the immigration boundary or to re-enter Macao afterward.
