A child with SEN may need school arrangements, transport and financial help. List the actual barriers before checking separate routes rather than seeking one generic SEN allowance.
What to have ready
Current support and whom it serves
EDB SENSE describes school-level resources, including grants and coordination arrangements, which are not cash payments to each family. Ask the school's SEN coordinator or relevant staff about assessment, learning and communication arrangements, recording goals and review dates.
SFO separately lists disability and SEN assistance. Qualifying primary or secondary special-school students under the relevant disability categories can receive an additional 50% travel subsidy if the STS criteria are met. Post-secondary TSFS/FASP support uses its own means and eligibility tests for additional academic costs or Disability Allowance circumstances. The levels cannot be interchanged.
Enquire, apply and follow up
- List travel, learning, communication and daily-living barriers with the SEN coordinator and social worker. Bring assessments and observations rather than assuming one diagnosis makes every service applicable.
- Separate school arrangements from household assistance and ask what the school delivers and what parents apply for with SFO. A school grant is not an entitlement to the same amount as personal cash.
- Use 2026/27 rules for the study level. For travel, check school category and ordinary STS conditions; for post-secondary study, use that year's TSFS/FASP requirements. Disclose CSSA or Disability Allowance as requested to avoid an incorrect or duplicate route.
- Submit under the current deadlines, retain decisions and report school or travel changes. Primary and secondary 2026/27 schemes have different dates, including 31 October for textbook assistance; do not wait until year end and use last year's forms.
Limits and other arrangements
SEN is not universal eligibility. The additional 50% travel assistance has specified scope and requires its conditions. School, medical, welfare and student finance serve different needs; enquire in parallel while confirming each independently.
Share assessment reports through the proper institutional channels, not public groups. Ask the school and worker to clarify responsibility where uncertain. Receiving educational support does not establish reimbursement of every private therapy expense.
A usable example
A parent discusses travel and learning barriers with the school and separately checks the special-school travel category. Two sheets track school arrangements and SFO evidence, then decisions. A school-resource amount is not entered as money personally received by the family.
Check school support and individual assistance separately under the study level and current-year criteria.
