If the shelf says HK$19 and the till charges HK$25, first compare size, variant, barcode and offer dates. A discrepancy warrants follow-up, but it does not automatically establish that every mistaken label must be honoured at the lowest displayed price. Preserve the offer, conditions and amount charged to distinguish a display problem, eligibility issue or checkout error.
What to have ready
Identify the same item by barcode
Photograph the label with the surrounding products, offer details and shelf location instead of cropping to the large number. Compare the receipt name, pack size and barcode. Check second-item discounts, bundle prices, membership coupons, minimum spend and designated cards. A separate discount line may affect the final net price even when the individual item line appears higher.
Before payment, ask staff to confirm the applicable price and conditions and decide whether to buy. After payment, retain the original receipt and ask the store to compare the purchase-time display with its till record. Establish whether the proposed remedy is the difference, a full return or a voucher, including expiry and further-purchase conditions, before accepting it.
Express the difference as a checkable calculation
List the item, quantity, displayed unit price, receipt amount, other discounts and requested difference. Do not describe the entire basket total as the loss. Website and in-store promotions can differ, so preserve the time and channel. If the store disputes membership eligibility, ask which term applies and whether the offer was activated at purchase.
Keep original photographs and receipts and redact card, membership and unnecessary personal information from shared copies. Follow a phone explanation with a dated written record of the reason and undertaking. Avoid edited label images or crops that obscure the item: the recipient needs the branch, product and time to investigate the matching transaction.
Choose the channel for the actual issue
- Send the calculation and evidence to branch or head-office customer service, request a written response and refund method and save the reference. Use Consumer Council's complaint route if the dispute remains unresolved.
- If the facts suggest misleading pricing, concealed material conditions or bait advertising, contact Customs. Enforcement depends on evidence and legal elements; do not automatically describe every till mistake as a criminal offence.
Example: a HK$6 multi-buy discrepancy
Ka Yi buys two matching shampoo bottles under a HK$38 pair offer. The receipt lists HK$22 each with no discount line. She captures the barcodes, offer dates and complete receipt and asks about the HK$6 difference. If one bottle has a different size, she corrects the comparison; if all conditions match, she escalates the same evidence to head office.
Consumer Council's earlier study documents this type of discrepancy. It provides background, not a current prediction about a particular branch. The outcome depends on the transaction and evidence. A stated amount and matching offer conditions are more useful for investigation than a general accusation about dishonest prices.
Align barcode, offer conditions and net charge before pursuing the difference.
