A forecast of rain today gives limited help with a specific departure. MyObservatory offers location-related information; first identify the place and time before using it for school collection, outdoor plans or a cross-border outing.
What to have ready
Start with the place you are travelling to
Download through the Observatory's official page and review location access, or specify a place manually on the map. Nearby weather-station readings are observations rather than a measurement for every street. For example, someone in a Kowloon office travelling to Sai Kung that afternoon should examine the destination and route as well as the office's conditions. A comfortable temperature beside the office does not establish a dry destination. Read the information's update time whenever you check it.
Distinguish current observations, radar rain areas, short-range rainfall or lightning forecasts, and longer-range forecasts. The nine-day view helps choose a day; a nowcast helps organise the next part of a journey. Neither guarantees dry or wet conditions at one exact point. When sharing a screenshot with family, keep the location and timestamp visible and explain the intended travel period so an old image does not circulate as a current forecast.
Combine nowcasts with official warnings
MyObservatory provides location-related rain and lightning forecasts for the coming one or two hours alongside weather warnings. Read the warning currently in force and its precautions before consulting the short-range product. A radar animation helps explain how rain areas changed; extending an apparent movement yourself is not an official forecast, and rain can develop or weaken. For a beach, trail or cycling outing, also examine relevant lightning, wind, heat and other warning information.
For school collection, compare the destination's short-range information, current warnings and the school's notice before selecting a route, waiting place and backup collection plan. A forecast of approaching rain is a prompt to prepare rain protection and an indoor meeting point. School or operator instructions may require a different arrangement. Avoid deriving a school suspension, workplace leave entitlement or transport shutdown from a rain graphic alone: those decisions have their own responsible organisations and announcements.
Treat notifications as one information channel
The Observatory states that push notifications may fail or arrive late because of network and other factors. Enabling them therefore does not replace actively checking the app or official website. Phone permissions, battery arrangements and connectivity can also affect the experience. Before an important outing, save the weather-warning page and operator-announcement links and make sure companions can open them. A quiet phone is not reliable evidence that no warning has been issued.
Refresh before leaving, before a connection and before the activity starts, noting the newest timestamp. On a mainland trip, check location selection, roaming and data charges; Greater Bay Area information in the app does not replace local emergency or transport announcements. If data cannot load, consult the official website or another formal publication channel and choose a cautious itinerary. Visible flooding, a closed trail and on-site staff instructions remain relevant even when a general forecast looks manageable.
Confirm place and time, then combine warnings, observations, forecasts and operating notices.
