A backup is more than two lines on a map. Identify the affected section, access to the alternative stop and whether the day's weather allows the surface transfer.
What to have ready
What the routine helps resolve
Save the main route and one alternative you can physically use, identifying MTR exits, bus stops and exposed walking segments. MTR Next Train provides arrival information for its covered services, rather than proving that the entire network and every connecting mode are operating normally.
Write decision points as conditions: check the alternative when an official delay affects the main route; contact the destination if exposed transfers become unsuitable. Observatory warnings and operator notices answer different questions. Absence of a next-arrival display does not necessarily establish that the whole route has permanently stopped.
A usable sequence
- On an ordinary day, note the alternative stop, exit and acceptable walking time, checking accessible access where needed. Do not wait for disruption to guess for the first time which nearby stop connects.
- Before departure, check official transport and weather information and identify the affected segment. Read notice time and direction. A screenshot records a check; later decisions should follow newer official updates.
- At the change point, check the alternative's operation and the destination's arrangement again. If weather affects several services, a route drawn by navigation is insufficient reason to head towards a more distant exposed stop.
- Tell the workplace, school or appointment unit your location and feasible options and save any rescheduling reply. Attendance, appointment and transport rules differ; a warning does not automatically cancel every activity under identical conditions.
An example and wording to adapt
A note could read: 'Main: MTR. Alternative: a bus stop whose access has been checked. Decision points: before leaving and before changing. If exposed walking is unsuitable: contact destination first. Last check: time and official notice.' Do not turn a fixed journey estimate into a daily guarantee.
Official next step and limits
This routine organises options and does not replace on-site safety instructions. Assess alternatives for older people, wheelchair users or children individually. In severe weather, flooding or closures, follow official safety arrangements rather than pursuing the original plan simply to avoid being late.
Prepare an accessible alternative, then decide using the day's official service and weather information.
