Baking, takeaway, dine-in, online restricted-food sales and resale of packaged products can involve different licences. Describe where food is prepared, where it is eaten and the processing you perform. FEHD's categories are the enquiry starting point; the premises and actual operation determine the requirements.
What to have ready
Start with the operation rather than its marketing name
Separate food consumed on the premises, food prepared for consumption elsewhere and sale of restricted foods, then consult FEHD's licence categories. A food factory, bakery, restaurant and restricted-food permit are not interchangeable descriptions. Takeaway shop or online shop describes the sales channel rather than resolving the complete licensing position. An operation involving several processes may need further permission; identify each process and product instead of selecting the cheapest-sounding category before describing what the business will do.
For example, describe a birthday-cake operation by ingredients, baking, storage, collection and whether customers eat on site. If also selling sushi or ice cream, identify the additional product and channel for a restricted-food check. This is an enquiry example, not a conclusion that residential production is lawful. Permission for online sales does not automatically approve manufacturing. Prepare the description before contacting FEHD so the answer addresses the proposed operation rather than only a vague shop label.
Check premises before leasing and the outcome before opening
Check the proposed address and plans against use, ventilation, drainage, fire, building and licence conditions, seeking appropriate professional help where needed. A previous tenant's restaurant operation does not establish that the new business is covered: licence status, transfer and proposed processes can differ. FEHD's guides set out forms and evidence, with full and provisional licences following their own procedures. Submitting an application or paying rent is distinct from permission to begin trading immediately.
Once permission is issued, record validity, conditions and approved scope before scheduling staff, purchases and opening. Check approval requirements before adding dine-in, changing processes or plans, or selling further products. Keep online seller information consistent with the actual licensed operator and address, and retain applications and departmental replies. Build food safety, temperature, sourcing and complaint records into daily work; one issued licence does not complete every responsibility throughout the life of the business.
Licensing follows the food and actual operation; a channel label or business registration cannot replace that check.
