You can seek help without a benefit name. Explain whom you care for, the task becoming difficult and present safety so the worker can understand urgency.
What to have ready
Current support and whom it serves
SWD commissions Tung Wah to operate 182183, fully implemented in September 2023 and confirmed in the March 2026 government reply as a 24-hour professionally staffed hotline. It serves carers of older people, people with disabilities and people in mental recovery, with free information, emotional support, assessment and referrals.
The hotline can support crisis outreach and day or residential respite matching, with transport or escort assistance assessed where relevant. Its official Cheer On Zone WhatsApp on 5322 2183 supports people with hearing or speech impairments. Follow that channel's arrangements rather than assuming identical response times for every contact method.
Enquire, apply and follow up
- Prepare whom you care for, the immediate difficulty and type of help sought, including existing services and language needs. You can enquire before all papers are available; not knowing a form's name is not a reason to wait.
- Call 182183 and explain urgency and safety. Use emergency services first for immediate danger or urgent medical help; caregiving support does not replace ambulance or police attendance.
- Confirm referral, respite and transport steps with the worker, providing care needs and contact availability. Outreach and matching depend on assessment and receiving services; calling does not itself reserve a residential place.
- Record the follow-up unit, time and evidence needed and contact again if the situation worsens. Keep necessary text-case records and send sensitive evidence through the worker's specified channel rather than seeking an intermediary publicly.
Limits and other arrangements
The hotline supports and refers; it does not approve all benefits or guarantee immediate home staffing. Carer allowances, respite and other services have distinct assessments. Clarify the official route before submitting financial documents for an assumed entitlement.
Ask about longer-term assessment for ongoing caregiving stress; a single hotline conversation does not resolve every need. Coordinate consistent information with an existing worker so the person responsible for each follow-up is clear.
A usable example
A caller can say: 'I care for my mother and can hardly transfer her safely these two days. I have an appointment tomorrow; someone is present now but care is missing next week. Please advise short-term help and assessment. Existing worker: ___. ' Describe the safety difficulty specifically rather than asking only about an allowance.
Explain safety and the immediate need; 182183 social workers can assess, support and refer formally.
