Water accounts are easy to overlook during a move. A dated meter photograph at handover helps establish which period of use belongs to whom.
What to have ready
Before you start
Water accounts are separate from the tenancy and other utilities. Taking over an active supply, closing an account, and reconnecting a disconnected supply may involve different requirements. Using someone else's bill is not an account transfer.
What to do, step by step
- Use the GovHK water-account hub to identify an opening, takeover, or closure request.
- Submit identity, address, and supply details through the applicable channel, checking the unit number.
- Pay a deposit or provide evidence if required and keep confirmations.
- Settle the old account separately and check deposit refund arrangements. Verify the name on the new account notice.
Costs, timing, and things to check
A working water supply does not prove that your account is open. Confirm the account status after moving in.
Explain disputed previous accounts or shared-meter arrangements to WSD before agreeing to pay someone else's balance.
Follow up both the new and old accounts and retain handover readings.
