Leaving an unused SIM in a drawer does not establish that monthly billing stops. Before cancellation, identify accounts receiving codes on that number so lower costs do not leave bank access stranded.
What to have ready
Before you start
Closure depends on the line, operator, home region, contract and identity process. A published online route may cover only mainland identity cards or one province; obtain instructions for your own permit or passport. Suspension for arrears does not replace deliberate account termination. Nor should all remaining credit be assumed refundable in cash. Ask about outstanding promotional commitments, supplementary services, final settlement and the evidence that establishes actual closure.
What to do, step by step
- While SMS remains available, list linked services and update each to a contact method you control. Test login and recovery on the new details before allowing the old line to close.
- Ask the home operator whether your actual document supports online closure or requires a particular counter and attendance. Check commitment expiry, appointment availability and the complete evidence list before making a trip.
- Request the final charge breakdown and credit handling and establish effects on supplementary lines, broadband or other bundles. Submit the formal cancellation only after those linked services have a workable plan.
- Retain both acceptance and final closure confirmation and reconcile the last debit. Recheck that the old number no longer remains as recovery contact for an important account or unfinished claim.
Costs, timing, and things to check
A dead SIM or suspended service is not proof of account closure. Check the account state. For disputed charges, retain the operator complaint and then inspect MIIT's applicable telecom-appeal route and required evidence.
Someone paying your bill does not establish authority to pass real-name closure verification. Confirm any permitted representation with the operator and keep the account holder in control of identity checks and consent.
A practical example
A user closing a Shenzhen number discovers that both a bank and 12306 still rely on it. The contact details are changed through each service's official route and tested first. The user then confirms a permit-compatible closure counter, final monthly charge and remaining-credit treatment. After obtaining actual closure confirmation, the old number is also removed from email recovery, preventing an overlooked account from depending on a surrendered line.
Migrate and test account access first, then complete closure and reconcile final charges.
