A mainland line kept for banking can lose connectivity after returning to Hong Kong. Separate operator activation, the enabled voice/SMS line and data selection instead of relying on one roaming switch.
What to have ready
Before you start
China Mobile's official Hong Kong page describes SMS reception separately from voice and data charges, but it concerns its own service. Check other operators and your actual plan individually. Receiving messages while roaming requires an active line registered on a supported network. A statement about free incoming SMS does not cover answering calls or background data. Before leaving the mainland, resolve arrears, risk-related suspension and roaming activation conditions with the operator.
What to do, step by step
- While still on the mainland, ask whether your plan supports Hong Kong voice and SMS and how roaming is activated. Save the confirmation; buying a data package alone does not answer that question.
- After returning, keep the mainland SIM enabled and check network registration. On a dual-SIM phone, select the intended everyday data line and follow both device and operator instructions for the actual configuration.
- Test an ordinary incoming message before attempting bank verification. Check country code and account contact records and follow retry timing rather than repeatedly requesting codes that may produce further restrictions.
- Check service state and billing monthly and retain the operator's official overseas contact. If roaming fails, use a trusted device to contact support and ask linked institutions about alternative personal verification.
Costs, timing, and things to check
A line kept only for codes may still carry a monthly charge. Answering calls, sending messages and data are separately priced. Use current operator guidance and the actual bill instead of an old forum tariff.
Number retention, security checks and arrears policies differ. Occasional non-use is not proof that a number will remain active indefinitely; clarify maintenance and recovery before relying on it for important bank access.
A practical example
A dual-SIM user returns to Hong Kong with internet on the Hong Kong line but no signal on the mainland one. The user first verifies mainland service validity and Hong Kong roaming, then resolves network registration. Only after an ordinary SMS arrives does the bank-code test proceed. Everyday data remains on the chosen Hong Kong plan, while incoming calls on the mainland number are assessed under their separate roaming charges.
Manage SMS-capable roaming separately from data costs and regularly confirm the line remains active.
