Describe why you need a Mainland number: verification texts, calls, identity matching or just internet access. Compare the actual service rather than only gigabytes and price.
What to have ready
Before you start
Mainland telephone service requires real-name registration, and MIIT lists the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents among accepted identity documents. A Hong Kong identity card is not the same document. Chinese Hong Kong residents should check the operator's in-person route with a valid permit; non-Chinese residents need confirmation for their non-Chinese permit or foreign passport category. An online offer may support only Mainland identity-card scanning and delivery verification, without establishing that an operator-owned counter rejects other lawful documents.
What to do, step by step
- Write down the required service and city, then ask China Mobile 10086, Unicom 10010 or Telecom 10000 for an operator-owned outlet handling your document. Confirm before travelling, since a small reseller or online delivery channel may not have the same identity-processing facilities.
- Bring the valid original document and your own phone for the required personal verification. Check the name, document category and complete identifier against the record. Retain the service receipt and assigned phone number, using your own identity rather than a friend's registration or a pre-activated card.
- Before paying, check monthly charges, commitments, data, voice, SMS, renewal and suspension terms. Test an ordinary call and message on the handset. Establish that the purchased product provides the required +86 telephone service rather than only mobile data, and save the accepted tariff version.
- Before returning, confirm Hong Kong roaming, incoming-SMS eligibility, balance and recharge arrangements. If a bank or government service requires matching registered identity, check with that service separately. Receiving one verification text does not establish eligibility for every identity-verified application.
Costs, timing, and things to check
A Mainland add-on number on a Hong Kong plan may receive messages without being an independent Mainland SIM or supporting management through every Mainland operator app. Ask the intended service what it accepts before committing to a long contract solely for that purpose.
After renewing a document, ask the operator about updating its identity record and save confirmation. Regular payment does not remove possible re-verification requirements. Verify notices through official contacts before acting, especially where a message directs you to upload identity photographs.
A practical example
A monthly Shenzhen visitor needs +86 texts and calls, confirms permit processing at an operator-owned outlet and tests the SIM with the original document. A one-day exhibition visitor who only needs internet instead compares roaming products rather than taking a long contract for its data headline.
Confirm number functions and the identity route, test after activation and check roaming before return.
