This guide helps residents interpret renewal stages. An email or submission acknowledgement does not establish an extended stay; follow the rules for your admission category and current deadline.
What to have ready
Before you start
Application windows vary between students, dependants of permanent residents, talent schemes and visitors. Current specified-scheme dependant guidance says to apply early within three months before expiry and at least six weeks beforehand; check the latest page for your own category instead of applying that window universally. The pandemic arrangement for extension applications from outside Hong Kong ended on 1 January 2024. Applicants must be physically in Hong Kong for submission and payment and collection of the extension e-Visa.
What to do, step by step
- Read the latest landing record and e-Visa for stay limits and conditions, rather than only passport expiry. Work backwards for the application window, employer letters, school confirmation and different family deadlines, placing reminders in a shared calendar.
- Document continuing eligibility through employment and company records, enrolment or dependant circumstances. A changed employer, divorce or ended course may require a change of conditions or another route. Identify the correct transaction before uploading a standard renewal bundle.
- Submit through the official service and save the reference and applicable application-fee receipt. Use that case for status enquiries, answer each request and record successful supplementary submission. Avoid inconsistent duplicate applications that obscure what evidence has actually been supplied.
- Following approval, pay the issuance fee where applicable, download the e-Visa and verify the new limit. If the original deadline approaches while processing remains incomplete, contact the responsible section immediately. Unless exceptional permission is granted, depart before the existing stay expires.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Pending processing does not automatically continue stay or work rights, and issuance payment also has presence requirements. Before a short Mainland trip, check whether re-entry will occur within valid permission and with the original residence circumstances unchanged.
Published processing periods depend on complete evidence and individual cases can take longer. Avoid non-refundable travel based on a friend's approval timeline. Retain official correspondence and evidence of every payment and issue stage so an enquiry can be answered precisely.
A practical example
A dependant with a 30 November limit follows the sponsor category's application window. A mid-November document request is answered while the processing section clarifies the outstanding deadline. The family calendar changes only after renewed permission is issued and checked.
Protect the existing stay deadline and distinguish submission, approval and issued renewal.
