A tidy exterior does not establish that a phone can be activated again, receive messages or continue receiving updates. Inspect the actual unit rather than relying on a seller's video of another device. Retail and private second-hand sales can involve different responsibilities and complaint options. Preserve the seller's identity and marketplace rules, and allow enough time for a proper handover inspection.
What to have ready
Compare the listing with the actual device
Save the advertised storage, regional model, battery condition, repair history and defects, then compare them with settings and the exterior. Ask about screen, battery and board replacements and supporting records. Available parts-history features depend on the model. No displayed history does not prove an untouched device, and matching serial numbers do not establish its entire ownership history.
Identify whether the seller is a private individual or a shop and record the payment recipient and promises. A verified marketplace badge is not a hardware or ownership guarantee. Avoid providing an unnecessary full identity-document copy. If the provenance, lost-device status or payment request is concerning, pause the handover and use the marketplace's verified enquiry route.
Have the previous owner resolve account locks
For an iPhone, follow Apple's preowned-device checklist and do not buy while Activation Lock remains enabled. Have the seller unlink the previous account themselves and complete the applicable erase and activation process. A promised password later or a third-party bypass is not a substitute. For Android, follow the manufacturer's account-removal and reset instructions and check enterprise management or other access restrictions.
Do not let the seller enter your new cloud or banking passwords. Perform necessary checks yourself over a trusted connection and use tests that do not need personal accounts where possible. If you signed in to a trial unit, check that synchronised local information has been removed afterwards; logging out alone may leave a copy on the phone.
Record functions and defects at handover
- Check charging, touch input, cameras, microphone, speakers, Wi-Fi and compatibility with your SIM or eSIM. Test available biometrics rather than treating storage capacity or appearance as a complete condition assessment.
- Before paying, preserve disclosed defects, untested functions, return periods and the receipt. If network restrictions or repair status cannot be established, request a written arrangement or defer the purchase.
Example: reaching the home screen is an incomplete check
Lok finds a phone advertised as nearly new. The seller demonstrates its camera but asks him not to reset it. Lok first asks how the previous account will be removed and the unit reactivated; if that cannot be done, he does not pay. If battery information then differs from the listing, he preserves both records and discusses the price or the promised cancellation arrangement before modifying the phone.
Choose follow-up according to the private or commercial nature of the transaction and marketplace terms. Consumer Council generally deals with consumer-trader disputes, while suspected theft or fraud needs police assistance. Do not assume every private second-hand disagreement can be resolved through a Council refund order.
Establish reactivation, test functions and preserve a clear transaction record.
