Trying ocarina, zheng or violin differs from committing to years of instrumental training. Choose the Music Office route first, then check whether its intake or remaining-place enrolment is currently open.
What to have ready
Before you start
The Instrumental Music Training Scheme serves young people broadly aged six to 23 through multi-year elementary, intermediate and advanced courses, with instrument-specific age, proficiency and selection requirements. Outreach Music Interest Courses provide shorter instrument, musicianship and workshop options for different age groups, subject to each class's limits. The 2026/27 Elementary Year-1 application closed on 5 August 2026, so an October reader should not treat that intake as open. Outreach Phase 59 runs from September 2026 to February 2027; remaining vacancies require a current check rather than a promise that any listed class is available.
What to do, step by step
- List age, previous experience, learning goal and realistic weekly practice time. Decide between a multi-year training pathway and a short outreach course, considering the learner's commitment rather than choosing only the nearest instrument class.
- Read the current prospectus for instrument ages, selection, prerequisites, centre and all lessons. Ask about instrument loan or purchase requirements, transport and home practice before assuming the tuition fee covers everything.
- For an annual intake, use the announced application system and dates. For outreach vacancies, use the official list and procedure. Keep the class code and avoid applying from an expired flyer for a different phase.
- After acceptance and payment, retain the receipt and trainee memorandum and check the first lesson's time and location. Resolve a missing acknowledgement with the Music Office instead of assuming a separate commencement reminder will arrive.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Fees, instalments, withdrawal and absence rules differ by programme. The training scheme's annual tuition is not the price of an outreach class; compare the complete commitment and instrument costs.
Outreach classes assess age at their specified reference date, and admission remains subject to the Office's decision. A vacancy does not remove proficiency or age requirements.
A practical example
An adult wanting to try zheng checks outreach foundation classes and vacancies rather than a youth training-scheme application. A parent seeking violin training verifies the instrument's age and selection conditions and home-practice needs. If the annual intake has closed, they watch for the next announcement or investigate a suitable short-course alternative instead of submitting an obsolete form.
Choose the appropriate pathway and follow the current intake arrangements.
