A book in another district can be reserved, but waiting time is not guaranteed. Verify the edition and status, then choose a pickup location you can actually use.
What to have ready
Before you start
Registered readers may reserve up to ten items, with the current fee of HK$3.30 per item or the prevailing valid fee at collection. Reference and other non-lending materials have restrictions, and overdue or outstanding-account conditions can prevent a request. Keep the transaction reference confirming submission. Being in a queue does not mean the book has reached your pickup library. Once the status becomes Available for pickup or Transit Hold, the reservation fee is payable even if the item is not collected. Consider the progress before assuming cancellation removes a charge.
What to do, step by step
- Search by title, author, ISBN and language, checking edition and volume. Avoid requesting the wrong instalment, a different translation or a digital resource when you need a particular physical book.
- Sign into your own account, select a suitable pickup library and confirm the request. Save the transaction reference and seek counter assistance if the confirmation or account restriction is unclear.
- Enable the official notification service and review the account periodically. Read the pickup notice's location and deadline. A transit status is not confirmation that the item is ready for immediate collection.
- Collect using your library card or registered identity card and the relevant payment arrangement, then check the loan due date. If the book is no longer needed, deal with the reservation early and verify any charge.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Reservation is not same-day delivery. Queue position, returns and transport affect timing. For an imminent assignment, prepare alternative lawful sources rather than depending on an uncertain arrival date.
Changing pickup location, deactivating or cancelling a request depends on its status. Read the account prompts and ask staff about authorised collection arrangements instead of lending your library card to a friend.
A practical example
A student needs a particular English edition and checks its ISBN before selecting a library accessible after school. If a pickup notice arrives during travel, they read the deadline and status and ask staff about available arrangements. They neither assume an uncollected item is free nor treat the assignment deadline as a guaranteed delivery date.
Verify the edition, choose pickup and track status and deadlines.
