Different rates at one hotel can have different cancellation rules. Compare the saving with what a changed trip would cost under each accepted contract.
What to have ready
Before you start
Accor's July 2026 conditions rely on property and selected-rate special conditions; even a flexible rate uses its specified cancellation window rather than a universal hotel deadline. Platforms and hotels may need coordinated refund authorisation, and Consumer Council's 2026 local cases illustrate delays when responsibility is unclear. Hotel accommodation tax resumed at three percent in January 2025. Service charge is excluded from its base, while accommodation extras such as beds, cots and late checkout can be included. Obtain the actual itemised conditions accepted for your booking.
What to do, step by step
- Before paying, save category, occupants, dates, nightly charges and cancellation, amendment and no-show terms, noting the time zone. A deadline labelled cancellable does not by itself establish the refund amount or whether every prepaid component is refundable. Match the written condition to the rate you actually selected.
- Separate room and accommodation extras, service charge, breakfast and tax and ask what is already included. In a hypothetical bill of HK$1,200 room charge and HK$120 service charge, tax is HK$36 and the total HK$1,356, provided there are no other charges. This is arithmetic, not a live hotel quotation.
- Cancel through the original booking channel and save the time, reference and confirmation. For a platform booking, clarify the hotel's authorisation and which party processes the refund. A front-desk call or deleted calendar entry is not confirmed cancellation. Request any discretionary waiver separately with reasons and evidence.
- Check refund amount, currency, original payment method and expected processing time and reconcile the credited payment. Preserve conflicting replies and request a written resolution. If unresolved, seek Consumer Council assistance through its process, without assuming that a complaint guarantees refund, compensation or a decision within your travel deadline.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Cancellation, date changes and leaving early can have different conditions. A cancelled flight or severe weather does not automatically establish a merchant refund. Check the accepted terms and applicable rights, with any travel-insurance claim handled separately through the insurer and its evidence requirements.
Do not create a replacement reservation and forget the original. A deposit authorisation, actual debit and refund are different payment events. Ask the card issuer and hotel about status and keep receipts, avoiding an assumption that release of an authorisation is a credited refund of accommodation already paid.
A practical example
If the accepted terms allow free cancellation before 6 pm Hong Kong time on 10 October, the traveller completes it through the original platform at 5 pm and retains confirmation. Where hotel authorisation is still pending, both parties confirm the refund handler and amount against the booking reference.
Cancel within the selected rate's deadline and confirm and reconcile total charges and any refund.
