An accessibility label does not establish suitability for every traveller. List essential equipment, clearances and transfer needs and obtain the hotel's confirmation before arrival.
What to have ready
Before you start
HKTB and MTR provide accessible-travel information, while the actual hotel category needs direct checking. The official ibis Central and Sheung Wan page lists reduced-mobility rooms and facilities, providing an example to contact. This does not establish that every standard room is suitable or a required category is available on particular dates. Check entrance, ramp, lift, bathroom and interior clearance together. The presence of a lift is not confirmation of a continuous accessible journey from street arrival to the bed and bathroom.
What to do, step by step
- Write the wheelchair or equipment width, transfer ability and side, shower needs and caregiver arrangements. Describe functional requirements rather than a generic request for a disabled room. Ordinary measurement enquiries do not require unnecessary medical records; provide only information needed for the hotel to assess the essential arrangement.
- Ask for clear doorway width, bed height and side clearance, bathroom thresholds, shower type and photographs of rails or seats, plus the lift and continuous street-entry route. Assess usable clearance rather than total room area. Confirm that measurements describe the exact category being reserved rather than another room used in promotional photographs.
- Have essential category and confirmed equipment recorded against the reservation, distinguishing guaranteed provision from a request. If the answer is subject to availability, ask about alternatives and cancellation before committing to a non-refundable rate. Retain the response, contact and booking reference so arrival staff can retrieve the same agreement.
- Use MTR's station-specific facility search for the actual lift exit and works information, then connect it to the hotel entrance. Verify equipment and luggage acceptance separately for airport buses or reserved vehicles. Before arrival, reconfirm room, equipment and a contingency for a lift or other essential facility becoming unavailable.
Costs, timing, and things to check
A walk-in shower, threshold-free shower and wheelchair-accessible shower need not mean the same configuration. An upgrade can lose essential rails or transfer clearance. Before accepting a replacement, check the same necessary features rather than assuming a larger or higher-priced category automatically improves accessibility.
For hearing, vision or cognitive needs, ask about alerts, lighting, information format and assistance arrangements. Separately confirm any connecting room needed by a caregiver. A general facilities label cannot replace individual confirmation and advance communication about what the traveller actually needs to use the room safely.
A practical example
A wheelchair user supplies equipment width and left-side transfer needs and requests doorway, bedside and shower details with a confirmed category. They then check the available Sheung Wan lift exit and hotel route rather than assuming the shortest walking line on a map is usable.
Request dimensions and photographs for functional needs, secure category confirmation and check the complete journey.
