Fast payments can go wrong with a new recipient, old phone number or replaced QR code. Pause on the first payment to check the displayed name, account and amount and preserve a traceable record.
What to have ready
Before you start
Hong Kong FPS uses identifiers such as a phone number, email, FPS ID or QR code. A recipient can arrange a default receiving account with a participating bank or wallet, so one person's identifier need not always point to the bank you expected. HKMA advises checking the masked name and payment information and keeping registered phone details current. Treat domestic FPS and separate cross-border payment services according to their own terms. If you send money incorrectly, contact the paying bank or wallet promptly rather than assuming a completed payment can be cancelled like a draft.
What to do, step by step
- Obtain details through a reliable known channel. For a purchase, separately confirm the merchant, order and amount instead of trusting a chat avatar. If a familiar contact changes account unexpectedly, verify through an independently known number.
- Read the masked name, receiving bank or wallet and identifier on the confirmation page. If these differ from expectations or remain uncertain, confirm with the intended recipient before proceeding, including which default account they expect to receive the money.
- For a larger first payment, consider agreeing a small test and having the intended recipient check actual receipt independently. Then verify the remaining amount and provider fees; a successful test alone does not establish that a seller is trustworthy.
- Keep the transaction reference and purpose. For a mistaken payment, promptly contact your own bank or wallet with the time, amount and recipient details. Follow its recovery process and document replies without assuming automatic reversal.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Take risk warnings seriously. No warning does not guarantee recipient reliability, and successful payment does not guarantee delivery of goods or performance of the promised service.
Before changing a phone number, update old FPS registrations and banking contact details. Removing an identifier registration at one provider does not necessarily remove every registration or close the underlying accounts.
A practical example
A friend's event contribution displays a different name or bank from what you expected. You call their known number; they explain a changed default wallet and independently confirm a small test. You then verify the balance before paying. An unexplained name mismatch means stopping rather than guessing the masked letters.
Verify the intended recipient before using fast payment.
