Being able to scan and pay does not establish that you are paying a merchant order. For purchases, accommodation and deposits, identify a collection transaction or private transfer before approving it.
What to have ready
Before you start
A merchant may scan the customer's payment code or have the customer scan a collection code and enter an amount. Both flows should provide identifiable recipient and transaction records. Personal collection QR codes and friend transfers should not be treated as one universal function. WeChat Pay HK expanded personal collection-code support in 2025, with actual eligibility still depending on the wallet and receiving side. Meanwhile, Alipay's overseas-card visitor route excludes private transfers. Distinguish a purchase from remittance, and do not equate merchant-order refunds, a private recipient returning money and statutory consumer rights.
What to do, step by step
- State what you are paying for and ask staff to confirm the collection method, amount and available order or receipt. For a deposit, obtain the written purpose, merchant identity and cancellation terms before scanning.
- After scanning, read the recipient and transaction description. If an unfamiliar personal name does not match the business, ask for an explanation before approving, rather than letting pressure replace a basic identity check.
- Check actual support in your Hong Kong or mainland wallet and distinguish merchant purchase, personal collection and transfer charges or restrictions. A function available to a mainland balance user may not apply to your overseas-card route.
- Match the wallet result with the merchant's order and retain the receipt and refund route. If rejected, use another accepted method; do not send a private transfer to an unrelated person merely to get past the checkout.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Your live payment code can let a merchant collect from you and differs from a QR code for receiving money. Do not send a complete active payment code to a stranger.
A sticker or chat image may have been replaced, so verify the recipient displayed by the app. The absence of a risk warning does not establish that the recipient or promised goods are trustworthy.
A practical example
Buying craft goods, a visitor receives a personal collection code. They check the business, recipient and receipt and inspect the transaction purpose in their Hong Kong wallet. When asked instead to transfer to an unrelated stranger, they stop and request an identifiable merchant payment route rather than treating both arrangements as equivalent.
Read the purpose and recipient before approving payment.
