After a disaster, accommodation, food and financial help may all be needed. Explain safety and immediate gaps first and retain incident evidence for fund applications; relief is not comprehensive compensation.
What to have ready
Current support and whom it serves
SWD emergency relief covers people affected by fire, typhoon, flooding, rainstorm, landslide, collapse and evacuation of dangerous premises under closure orders. The Emergency Relief Fund separately provides assistance to eligible people needing urgent disaster relief. Its purpose is relief rather than compensation for every loss.
SWD handles injury or death grants; domestic, marine and agricultural categories involve Lands, Marine and AFCD responsibilities. Deadlines vary: fund documents list six months for injury or death while some other items use much shorter working-day periods. One category's limit must not be applied to every loss.
Enquire, apply and follow up
- Follow emergency and on-site instructions where danger remains; do not return to closed or unsafe premises for photographs. Tell relief staff about household, accommodation, food and care gaps so immediate needs can be addressed first.
- When safe, retain incident dates, official notices, medical records, damage and expenditure evidence by category. Preserve sources and originals rather than exaggerating the loss or combining different incidents to increase an application.
- Use SWD's current fund page to establish the department, form and deadline. Injury and domestic damage may require different routes in one household. Ask what can be submitted initially and supplemented instead of waiting for all repairs before the first enquiry.
- Apply as directed and retain receipts, references and required disclosures of insurance or other assistance. Supplement evidence through official instructions. Approval covers its specified relief; compensation or insurance claims follow their separate processes.
Limits and other arrangements
The fund does not establish identical cash for every victim or full compensation for all possessions. Relief services, the fund, charitable donations and insurance differ; an announced amount from one body is not a universal entitlement for every affected person.
If temporary desks or special arrangements are announced, check current official notices and the incident covered. Confirm existing deadlines rather than assuming new support automatically extends every earlier application period.
A usable example
A flooded household explains accommodation and food needs first, then separates domestic loss from injury records and asks the responsible departments and deadlines. It later supplements safe photographs and medical evidence, without treating the fund as automatic reimbursement of every renovation bill.
Prioritise safety and basics, then apply by the loss category, authority and deadline.
