This chapter covers connections already within the mainland. Guangzhou Metro also operates some intercity services, but a related operator name does not establish interchangeable tickets, codes or concessions.
What to have ready
Identify three possible fare systems
Label the journey as a national-rail train ticket, Guangdong Intercity and city metro rather than using rail transit as one category. An ordinary 12306 ticket identifies a dated train and allocation; an intercity product may have separate same-day or public-transport-style arrangements; metro charging follows its own ticket and entry-exit records. Municipal guidance describes both 12306 and alternative payment systems on the linked intercity lines, but that does not make an ordinary G-prefix ticket a turn-up-and-go product. Guangfo Metro and the Guangfo South Ring intercity have similar names, so read the complete line and station. A connected map, walking passage or mutually recognised screening does not establish that one ticket covers every fare. Budget the formally quoted segments separately when planning accommodation or transport.
Check the code and document channel
Official Guangdong Intercity guidance describes first-use real-name registration and an intercity travel code, distinct from a general metro code. Permit or passport holders should not interpret swipe an identity card as proof that every self-service registration function accepts them. Check the current intercity or 12306 channel for your actual document and ask the station's official customer service when necessary. Where a route lists mainland resident-ID eligibility only, use a separately confirmed supported route rather than borrowing another person's code. Shenzhen Metro's official ticket page lists single tickets, Shenzhen Tong, several codes and other payment products, but those are not all usable in Guangzhou or on intercity rail. Open the correct service, verify payment and gate symbols, then enter; a QR image alone does not establish its valid network.
Complete the record and check separate rules
After entering a fare system, complete the exit with the same accepted credential for that journey. If a gate rejects it, ask customer service to inspect the missing record instead of repeatedly trying another card or screenshot. Shenzhen's official guidance requires incomplete code journeys to be corrected as prompted and has its own overtime, over-distance and invalid-ticket processes; other cities require their own instructions. National railway age-based child rules should not be imported automatically into metro concessions, nor should its 20-kilogram allowance be assumed to apply to every metro. Refunds, day-pass periods and invoices belong to the issuing system. A national-rail electronic invoice will not also document a city-metro expense. Directing the problem to the correct operator helps it find the actual journey record.
Worked example: move from a national train to intercity and metro
A traveller arriving at Guangzhou South plans to use the Panyu intercity area to reach Foshan West and then take a metro connection. They label all three systems, inspect the current intercity timetable and confirm a purchase channel for their Mainland Travel Permit, rather than assuming a Shenzhen metro code covers everything. Within the hub they follow intercity signs, verify the ticket and establish the exit method. At Foshan West they follow metro signage and that network's ticket arrangements. If a code has an exit problem, they ask that station's customer service to inspect the entry record before attempting another code. Walking passages and waiting need a separate allowance. Child treatment, luggage and invoices are also checked under each system, rather than copied from the first ticket.
Identify the system before using a ticket; convenient interchange does not merge fares, document channels or concessions.
