Family legal and care support: prepare records and find the right service
Find the next step for free legal advice, family mediation, maintenance, enduring powers, adult guardianship, dental support and tertiary assistance.
Start with the task you are preparing for and work through the next steps.
Start with these three stages
A family problem can involve law, care and costs at the same time, while each service addresses a different part. Prepare one page identifying the person needing help, the events, existing orders or applications and the most urgent deadline, then choose the relevant official route below. Bring the related records and specific questions to a first enquiry. For an adult's financial authority, guardianship and care, distinguish the person's capacity, the particular decision and the service's powers. This helps the adviser or caseworker assess the real task and identify what remains outside that service.
Start legal matters with a dated sequence: documents received, reply dates, hearings and payment deadlines. Civil advice, Magistrates' Court Duty Lawyer assistance, family mediation and court enforcement serve different purposes. For divorce or maintenance, organise orders, household expenses, children's arrangements and payment records, clearly identifying disputed or unverified points. An appointment is a next step; it does not itself establish representation, an amended order or an extended deadline. Keep the existing schedule visible while seeking the appropriate advice.
For an adult relative's decision or care needs, distinguish financial authority, treatment, living arrangements and urgent assistance. Check enduring powers and adult guardianship separately because their procedures and powers differ. Being a relative does not establish authority over every decision. For example, when a person struggles with bills, organise existing arrangements, expressed wishes, capacity information and the particular tasks for professional or official assessment. Describe the need and relevant evidence rather than treating a transfer of every account as the automatic first step.
For a senior card, community dental support or tertiary assistance, check the current route, applicant, assessment and evidence requirements. An old poster does not keep a closed scheme open to new applications. Review repayment, interest and actual affordability for a loan. Preserve the application reference, document deadline and formal outcome, and plan care or tuition expenses separately in the household budget. Keep unapproved assistance recorded as pending so family members know when to follow up, supply information or seek a referral.
