An AI statement that you can apply is not an eligibility decision. Highlight the claims that would change your action and check the responsible authority. A news announcement, passage of legislation, commencement, and opening of applications can occur on different dates. A year alone is insufficient. Verification is especially important before missing a deadline, stopping a payment, signing a document, or assuming a household qualifies.
What to have ready
Before you start
Create four fields for each claim: official subject name, asserted rule, applicable date, and official evidence. Use e-Legislation for Hong Kong legal text and versions, and the administering department's current application page for a benefit. Do not apply another Greater Bay Area city's arrangement to Hong Kong. Open an AI-provided link and verify what it actually says; a plausible title is not evidence.
What to do, step by step
- Ask the tool to separate what the source states, its inference, and unresolved questions, then inspect that separation yourself rather than accepting the labels.
- Find the same subject through the authority's own entry point and check versions, attachments, application periods, and transitional arrangements. Record when you checked it.
- Compare your circumstances condition by condition without giving the AI a full identity document or bank details. Turn unusual circumstances into questions for the authority.
- Avoid an irreversible step based on an unresolved claim. Obtain the appropriate official answer before completing an application or making a consequential decision.
Costs, timing, and things to check
A model may combine proposals, overseas rules, old thresholds, or examples. Fluency and citations do not correct an error; requesting a checkable basis is only the beginning.
Keep official text, document versions, and enquiry references. AI can organise questions or summaries, while the application outcome comes from the administering body's process and notice.
A practical example
If an answer says an income below a figure qualifies, ask whether it means an individual or household, which months are assessed, whether assets also matter, and which effective period the figure belongs to. Check each question using the official form and department's answer. This method remains useful even when the original AI statement turns out to be partly correct.
Find the applicable official text and match your own circumstances; use the AI answer as a starting point for enquiries.
Official information and enquiries
