After job loss, handle the search for work and immediate living costs in parallel, while preserving records of final pay and employment rights.
What to have ready
Before you start
Labour Department job centres and the Interactive Employment Service offer vacancy information, referrals and personalised employment support. A job-search registration is not an automatic cash-benefit application. Financial assistance has its own eligibility and assessment, including CSSA's household circumstances. Final employment payments, notice arrangements, outstanding wages and leave should also be checked against the contract and law rather than postponed until a new job is found.
What to do, step by step
- Keep termination messages, contracts, payslips and attendance. List expected payments and the employer's response, then use Labour Department labour-relations services for a dispute. Registering for jobs does not automatically lodge a wage complaint.
- Choose a convenient job centre and update your CV, work limitations and acceptable hours. Search through the official Interactive Employment Service, recording the vacancy, pay and contact information for follow-up.
- Ask staff about counselling, recruitment events and programmes appropriate to your age or circumstances. Incentive schemes have specific entry conditions and start dates; check their enrolment steps before assuming a new job will qualify.
- If money is insufficient, take household financial records to SWD or a social worker to discuss support. Notify and enquire separately about affected student finance, medical-fee assistance or an existing WFA claim.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Explain transport, caring responsibilities, health limitations and training needs when seeking assistance. This is more useful than only saying that any job will do. Short-term earnings may also affect household assistance, so keep hours and pay evidence when work starts.
Pause and verify advertisements demanding upfront fees, use of your bank account, money transfers or full login credentials. Check the actual employer, duties and written terms even after finding a listed vacancy. A referral does not guarantee hiring or payment.
A practical example
A middle-aged worker loses a job while supporting children. They can obtain CV and vacancy support at a job centre, enquire about household assistance and ask the student to report the financial change to SFO, without waiting for the next recruitment round.
Follow employment, living-cost support and final-pay issues in parallel, retaining each service's records.
