Check your passport before buying flights. Destination validity rules, passport processing, and visa requirements are separate issues; an unexpired passport alone may not be enough.
What to have ready
Before you start
An HKSAR passport is generally available to Chinese citizens who are Hong Kong permanent residents and hold a valid permanent identity card. Holding an HKID alone does not establish nationality eligibility. Children have different evidence, photo, and parental-consent requirements.
What to do, step by step
- Check the adult or child category and resolve inconsistent identity details before applying.
- Choose an eligible online, postal, drop-in, or counter route. Prepare a compliant photo file for electronic applications.
- Verify particulars, pay, retain the reference, and respond to requests for additional documents.
- Bring the required originals and old document for collection. Check the name and destination entry requirements before travel.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Allow for postage and additional-document requests as well as normal processing. Someone else's collection date is not a guarantee.
A passport is not a Home Return Permit and does not replace mainland entry requirements.
Check eligibility and photographs, then allow time for application, collection, and any visa.
