A VHIS label alone does not establish what a hospital claim will pay. Read Standard or Flexi Plan status, deductibles, ward class, exclusions and commencement against your actual documents.
What to have ready
Before you start
All Certified Plans meet or exceed VHIS minimum requirements. Standard Plans have standardised terms and benefits, while Flexi Plans add different designs to equivalent basic protection. The official search helps verify a certification number, version and standard premium schedule; it is not your personal underwriting quotation. Age-banded premiums can change upon renewal. Read the policy schedule, individual exclusions or loading and endorsements together, including which costs fall within a benefit limit. A marketing claim of comprehensive protection does not eliminate a deductible, coinsurance or the need to satisfy the claims procedure.
What to do, step by step
- Collect the latest policy, benefit schedule, renewal notice and endorsements. Match the certification number and version in the official search before comparing a brochure with your actual cover.
- List the relevant hospital, surgery, day procedure or investigation and ask how limits, ward adjustments and deductibles apply to that service. Request an explanation linked to the actual policy wording.
- Before planned treatment, ask the provider and insurer about estimates, pre-authorisation and required evidence. Retain the written response and its conditions instead of treating a telephone estimate as unconditional approval.
- Track claim submission, document requests and the settlement breakdown. Ask for itemised reasons for an unexpected outcome and review renewal changes separately from the completed claim.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Guaranteed renewal is not a promise of a fixed premium. Replacing cover can involve underwriting or a gap, so verify acceptance and effective dates before cancelling an existing policy.
Tax treatment, insurance reimbursement and clinical need are separate questions. Check tax eligibility with IRD and discuss treatment with the clinician instead of letting a tax-saving claim decide medical care.
A practical example
Two Flexi Plans advertise similar annual premiums, but one has a deductible and the other different ward and surgical limits. Ask each insurer to explain the same proposed procedure using its policy, including limits and the potential amount paid personally. Check future renewal conditions as well. Comparing the first-year premium alone would conceal important differences even though both products are certified.
Compare cover and personal costs using the actual policy and retain formal explanations.
