Tai Kwun connects police, magistracy and prison buildings with art. The compound's earlier opening does not mean its galleries are open or every programme is free.
Before you go
The address contains several entrances
Tai Kwun's address is 10 Hollywood Road, Central, but its official visitor information lists entrances from Hollywood Road, Old Bailey Street, Arbuthnot Road and a footbridge. The footbridge connects with the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator system as one approach; check direction and the actual return path separately. For wheelchair access, the venue identifies Pottinger Gate and Bauhinia House Gate as suitable entrances, with the Police Headquarters Block's lift serving the Pottinger approach. Ask about the route from your chosen gate to the specific gallery because conservation buildings have different internal conditions. At the Barrack Block Visitor Centre, obtain a map and confirm meeting point, toilets and the next gallery rather than testing stairs from the nearest doorway.
Use separate times for compound, heritage and art
Current visitor information lists the compound from 8am to 11pm, the Visitor Centre from 10am to 8pm, and JC Contemporary from 11am to 7pm Tuesday through Sunday. Heritage displays generally run from 11am to 7pm, with earlier arrangements for the Main Heritage Gallery and Operation Central. These baseline times still require checking individual programmes and temporary notices. Free compound access does not include every special exhibition, workshop or performance. A Monday trip specifically for JC Contemporary needs its closing-day check. Record the exhibition's full title, dates, building, admission conditions and any last-entry information before buying. Public tours appear with registration in the programme listing; verify the day's session, language and meeting point, and secure a place through the stated process.
Follow one historical thread through three functions
AMO presents the former Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison as connected buildings for law enforcement, judicial work and detention. A half-day can start with the main historical interpretation, continue into whichever magistracy or prison displays are open, then compare Parade Ground and Prison Yard. Access is not unrestricted through every door. Give children one question: how do offices, hearing spaces and detention areas change the way people can move? Use labels and interpretation to answer rather than touching heritage fabric or climbing installations. Treat the art exhibition separately under its viewing rules, including photography or capacity arrangements. Eat only in permitted places, maintain a considerate gallery atmosphere and include a rest so the historical material can be absorbed.
Worked example: Monday and Saturday versions
Two visitors available on Monday who mainly want prison history can check heritage-display access and temporary closures, then combine the Visitor Centre with one open prison area, saving JC Contemporary for another day. If contemporary art is the priority, move the visit to a checked Saturday, secure the chosen exhibition's ticket and place the free heritage portion around it. A companion avoiding slopes should confirm the gate and lift route before arriving, not start looking for a level approach on Old Bailey Street. If a tour is full, use the map independently instead of treating free tours as guaranteed walk-in places. In rain, reduce courtyard time while checking the gallery's and compound's weather notices separately; one cancelled activity does not necessarily close the entire site.
Choose exhibition and entrance first; compound hours and free access do not replace programme checks.
