Free access may cover general admission, a particular gallery or a temporary event. Check the exhibition and visit pages rather than assuming every programme is included. Plan operating days, bookings, connections and a meal together, using the named venues as starting points.
Before you go
Two examples in different areas
The Hong Kong Museum of Art at 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, lists free admission except special exhibitions; its normal Thursday closure has a public-holiday exception. CUHK Art Museum lists free exhibitions without booking, while campus visitors lacking specified university documents must register identity information with security. Treat these as separate half-day options: pair the harbour museum with Tsim Sha Tsui, or plan the CUHK campus connection after University Station. Check venue notices for exceptions on your chosen date.
Identify exactly what is included
Open the target exhibition page and record gallery, dates and admission conditions. Free general access does not automatically include a talk, workshop, film or special exhibition. M+ programmes have their own arrangements; a past free-admission day is insufficient evidence for a current visit. For a guided tour, check language, meeting point, age and registration. If places are unavailable, decide whether an independent visit still meets your purpose before arranging lengthy travel or committing the rest of the day.
Make a small budget with separate lines for exhibition entry, workshops, return transport, lunch and storage needs. For example, two adults visiting the Museum of Art's free general galleries can keep a paid special exhibition as an optional addition before a waterfront walk. This is a planning example rather than a ticket quotation. Check current prices and availability if you add the special exhibition. For access needs, ask the venue about the actual entrance, lift and gallery route instead of inferring access from a broad description.
Prepare for the actual visit
Recheck closures, works and weather notices before leaving. Photography permission varies by exhibition, so read the gallery signs before photographing objects, and avoid flash or tripods unless expressly permitted. Give the visit time for looking and resting; free admission does not require fitting three museums into one day. Share the exhibition's full name and official page with companions so everyone can recover the correct admission and transport information even if a search result or forwarded poster is outdated.
Confirm the free-access scope and opening day, then build a half-day plan in one area.
