Check whether the programme supports student admission before enrolment, then coordinate with the institution's visa team. Academic acceptance, immigration approval, admission and registration are separate stages.
What to have ready
Before you start
Applicants generally need acceptance for a qualifying course and sufficient funding for tuition, maintenance and accommodation without work or public funds. ID995A is the applicant form and ID995B the sponsor form; the local sponsor may be the institution or a qualifying individual. Mainland residents, certain former Mainland residents in Macao and specified nationalities have programme restrictions and exceptions. An overseas student's private-school route cannot simply be applied to all applicants. Under-eighteens also need signed parental and Hong Kong guardian consent and accommodation evidence.
What to do, step by step
- Send the exact programme, award, mode of study, nationality and current residence to the institution's visa team. Mainland applications follow the sponsoring institution's channel. An admission email does not itself authorise immediate arrival to begin studies in Hong Kong.
- Prepare travel and identity records, photograph and acceptance letter with the sponsor's category-specific evidence. For a minor, settle Hong Kong guardianship and accommodation early, rather than reaching the start of term without the required signatures from parent and guardian.
- Create a funding sheet for tuition, housing, deposits and living expenses supported by genuine financial records. Upload required certified translations and retain submission confirmation. Keep the institution and supplementary replies aligned so differing versions do not obscure the support arrangements.
- After approval, use the applicable payment and e-Visa collection channel. Mainland residents arrange the Exit-entry Permit and relevant endorsement and present them together. On arrival, verify stay dates, institution and course conditions before completing the remaining registration arrangements.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Student employment depends on current conditions, eligibility for temporary exemptions and the effective No Objection Letter. Courses, exchange students and sub-degree students are not treated identically. Check the specific permission with the institution before accepting a part-time job or placement.
Changing institution or course and ending studies early can require further approval or notification. Study extensions generally have a four-week application window before expiry; check the current category page and individual grant, especially when travel-document validity shortened the original stay.
A practical example
A Macao student with an offer checks their status, programme and Macao identity and travel documents. If under eighteen, they complete guardian and housing arrangements rather than omitting them because an adult classmate submitted a simpler application bundle.
Confirm the eligible programme and sponsor, then submit complete funding, guardianship and admission evidence.
