A festival holiday, public holiday and event operating period can differ, and annual editions may change dates or venues. Last year's guide can suggest an activity type; this year's organiser confirms the actual visit. For an evening outing, check lighting, last admission, crowd controls and the journey home.
Before you go
Look beyond the holiday itself
Identify whether the activity is a display, procession, performance or market. A display can span weeks, a procession can occur on one evening, and workshops can require session bookings. Check the current year's published Gregorian dates instead of carrying forward an older lunar-festival schedule. When an event is extended, establish which component continues and whether that includes performances, stalls and lighting. Items sharing an event page may still have different end dates and admission arrangements.
A check using the 2026 lantern event
At the 2 October 2026 check, the International Lantern Spectacular listed displays continuing to 7 October, while some robot demonstrations had concluded. Normal lighting was listed as 6:30pm to 11pm; extended hours on specified September dates should not be applied to October. For an October visit, choose an active component and consult the latest queue entrance. These dated details illustrate the verification method; reopen the current organiser notice because weather or crowds may change the arrangement.
With older companions or children, choose a clear meeting point outside the entrance and allow for toilets, seating and an early-departure option. Ask whether the priority is a main installation, performance or photographs before deciding the route. Avoid pushing against pedestrian flows or crossing barriers to finish every zone. Follow staff instructions and temporary entry suspensions. Free access can still involve an early queue closure, so explain beforehand that admission depends on the live arrangement rather than a promised place.
Check weather and return travel separately
After reading Observatory warnings, check whether the organiser has cancelled, delayed or suspended particular activities. A different venue's bad-weather policy does not determine this festival's operation. For late dispersal, consult transport notices for the actual date and protect final trains, ferries or border connections. If a hotel or return journey cannot be changed, choose an earlier departure. Treat the outing as successful when the group has enjoyed a manageable visit, rather than requiring everyone to stay until the final light switches off.
Checking the current edition and individual component is more useful than knowing only the holiday date.
