Before buying tickets, identify every traveller's nationality, residence status, documents and purpose. People leaving the same GBA city may need entirely different entry arrangements.
What to have ready
Understand the arrangements before leaving
Mainland residents normally need a valid Exit-Entry Permit and an appropriate Hong Kong endorsement for family visits, tourism or business. An unexpired permit does not establish endorsement validity, remaining journeys or the correct purpose. Hong Kong permanent residents and Chinese citizens overseas have other arrangements which need separate checks.
Macao permanent and non-permanent residents have different arrangements. A foreign passport holder living in Guangzhou or Shenzhen must check Hong Kong requirements for that nationality and passport. Mainland residence permission, visa-free admission to the mainland or a mainland work permit does not itself authorise entry into Hong Kong.
Complete the journey step by step
- Make one record per person: nationality, permanent or non-permanent residence, document and purpose. Do not apply one adult's status to the family. Children, a foreign spouse or an accompanying caregiver each need an individual check before any non-refundable transport or accommodation is purchased.
- Use the relevant Immigration Department guidance for Hong Kong admission, then check departure and return requirements with the issuing authority. If uncertain, describe the complete status and itinerary in an official enquiry rather than asking only what a person travelling from Shenzhen needs.
- Match names and document numbers to tickets and carry the originals and necessary approvals. Keep offline accommodation, return and contact details. A photograph or photocopy is a backup for assistance and cannot simply replace the original travel document at the boundary.
- After clearance, check the permitted stay and conditions and put a departure reminder in the itinerary. If the real purpose changes to employment, study or residence, investigate the appropriate approval before starting the activity rather than relying on a tourist admission.
Restrictions that are easy to miss
A transport ticket, hotel reservation or event ticket is not entry permission, and e-Channel eligibility does not remove immigration conditions. Another traveller's usual stay is not your granted limit. Use the actual admission record rather than a travel agent's general estimate.
Check the return separately. Leaving the mainland for Hong Kong can affect a foreign visitor's remaining mainland visa entries. Hong Kong visa-free arrangements do not restore permission to enter the mainland, and a return ticket does not resolve an immigration-document problem.
Prepare a workable itinerary
For a Shenzhen family group, the mainland adult checks the permit and endorsement, a Macao permanent-resident relative checks the valid Macao identity document, and a foreign spouse checks passport and Hong Kong visa requirements. One coach booking can therefore need three separate document checklists.
Check documents by individual status before booking and verify departure and return requirements too.
