Manage miles expiry and transfer timing with posting dates
Original explanation or a governed summary with official sources; current official terms remain authoritative.
Different balances can have different deadlines
Record bank-points expiry, airline-miles expiry, and promotional-bonus crediting separately. Continued card use does not establish qualifying activity in an airline account, and points waiting to transfer do not establish an expiry extension. Use each account's actual balance, transaction history, and displayed deadline.
Build a small table with reward name, balance, expiry date, extension conditions, processing time, and next check. Record batches separately if they expire independently. For an activity-based programme, record the posting date of the last qualifying activity rather than only the date you submitted it.
Cathay example: qualifying activity and older miles
As reviewed on 2 October 2026, Cathay's official FAQ says new miles earned from 1 January 2020 have their expiry extended by 18 months from the last miles crediting or debiting date. Miles credited on or before 31 December 2019 follow the earlier arrangement. Cancellations and refunds are listed as non-qualifying activity, so not every balance change extends expiry.
Check your own displayed deadline and confirm that the activity you intend to use qualifies. Afterwards, verify both the posted transaction and the updated expiry date. If they differ from what you expected, retain the activity record and ask Cathay to investigate. Check other programmes individually rather than applying Cathay's 18-month example to them.
Check transfer time for the particular programme and channel
One fast transfer does not establish instant processing for every bank, programme, and channel. HSBC's mileage-programme page distinguishes processing times, with some transfers taking up to two weeks. Check the instructions for your particular card and destination programme. Verify account-name matching and linking in advance.
Hypothetical example: bank points expire on 30 June and the applicable channel quotes up to two weeks. You might set 1 June as your own preparation check to allow time for account linking, enquiries, and posting. This is a planning example, not a bank-guaranteed safe cutoff. Confirm whether the deadline requires submission, bank-points deduction, or miles crediting before finalising the schedule.
A reminder needs a completion check
Set an early review and a result check for each balance. At review, confirm expiry rules, minimum blocks, fees, and a practical use. At the result check, verify posted miles, correct balances, and any updated expiry date. Follow the programme's processing period and enquiry procedure if activity has not appeared.
Avoid converting all bank rewards into an undecided airline programme solely to prevent expiry. Assess bank-reward retention, available cash redemption, and acceptable travel uses first. If qualifying activity is needed, choose an activity you can use, understand its cost, and allow processing time.
- Each account has a separate balance and expiry reminder
- I know which activity qualifies and when it posts
- I have checked the channel, account details, and processing time
- I mark completion only after checking posting and expiry
