Plan a welcome bonus with deadlines, net spending, and repayments
Original explanation or a governed summary with official sources; current official terms remain authoritative.
Check eligibility before applying
A welcome offer can differ for new customers, existing customers, specific application channels, or people who recently cancelled a card. Read the full terms and match each condition to your circumstances. If the customer definition is unclear, ask the bank before relying on the advertised bonus and retain its response.
Record the application deadline, approval conditions, registration step, spending-window start, and any requirement to keep the account open. Card issuance, approval, activation, and the first purchase are different dates. Use the event specified in the offer rather than choosing the date most convenient for your budget.
- Which eligible customer category applies to me?
- Have I used the required channel and completed registration?
- Which event starts the spending window?
- What fees, account-duration rules, or bonus clawbacks apply?
Hypothetical example: fit a HK$12,000 threshold into the budget
Suppose an offer requires HK$12,000 of eligible net spending in a specified 90-day window. This is not a current bank offer. You already budget HK$3,500 a month for eligible everyday purchases: HK$10,500 over three months. A planned HK$2,000 appliance takes the total to HK$12,500, sufficient only if every purchase meets the terms.
A HK$1,000 appliance refund reduces net spending to HK$11,500, leaving a HK$500 gap. Check whether remaining planned purchases qualify and can post in time. The total transactions displayed in an app may not be the eligible net amount. If reaching the threshold requires unwanted purchases, reassess the application.
Track purchase, posting, and reward-crediting dates separately
A purchase date may differ from the bank's posting date, and completing the threshold need not trigger an immediate miles credit. Record purchase dates, posting dates, and eligible amounts for larger planned expenses. Check the offer's treatment of merchant categories, payment methods, instalments, and refunds before counting them.
Set your own progress check before the official deadline, perhaps two weeks earlier. This is a planning buffer, not a promise about bank processing. Keep registration confirmations, applicable terms, and statements. If rewards have not arrived within the stated crediting period, use those records when asking the bank to investigate.
- Confirm that each planned purchase qualifies
- Track posted net spending and label pending transactions separately
- Set both an early progress check and the official deadline
- Keep refund and reward-crediting records
Make repayment capacity part of the decision
Even if the spending window lasts several months, each card statement has its own payment deadline. Reserve the cash for full repayment before spending. The HKMA's card guidance advises against unnecessary purchases for welcome gifts and against minimum or partial repayments that incur finance charges.
List the annual fee, charges, and extra purchases caused by pursuing the offer. Whether the bonus serves your intended trip also depends on award availability, cash charges, and booking terms. A large miles balance without a practical use does not justify exceeding the budget.
