Calculate your real HK$ per mile after reward caps
Original explanation or a governed summary with official sources; current official terms remain authoritative.
Identify the unit behind the advertised rate
HK$2 per mile means one mile for every HK$2 spent; a lower number earns miles faster when considering spending alone. Five points per HK$1 also requires a points-to-miles ratio. Keep cashback percentages separate, and do not fold a one-off welcome bonus into a recurring earning rate as if it returns every year.
For illustration only, earning five points per HK$1 with 100 points converting to one mile gives HK$20 per mile. A qualifying category earning 20 points per HK$1 under the same conversion ratio gives HK$5 per mile. These are hypothetical rates. Minimum conversion blocks and transaction rounding can reduce the balance you can actually transfer.
Worked example: bonus spending followed by the base rate
All figures are hypothetical. The first HK$6,000 spent in a selected category earns at HK$2 per mile; further category spending earns at HK$6 per mile. Other eligible spending also earns at HK$6 per mile. You spend HK$10,000 in the selected category and HK$8,000 elsewhere, a monthly total of HK$18,000.
Bonus portion: HK$6,000 ÷ 2 = 3,000 miles. Category spending above the cap: HK$4,000 ÷ 6 ≈ 666.67 miles. Other spending: HK$8,000 ÷ 6 ≈ 1,333.33 miles. Before rounding, that totals 5,000 miles. Your blended rate is HK$18,000 ÷ 5,000 = HK$3.60 per mile. Applying HK$2 per mile to everything would incorrectly estimate 9,000 miles.
Check what the cap actually limits
A cap can limit eligible spending, extra rewards only, or a shared allowance across several categories. If the terms cap bonus miles, check whether base miles continue; the worked example cannot simply be reused. A calendar month and a statement cycle can also differ. For a large purchase near a boundary, use the date definition in the terms.
Remove excluded spending before assigning the rest to bonus and base categories. To assess the entire household budget, you can separately divide all spending by credited miles. For a card comparison, state whether the spending figure includes eligible purchases only or every expense, and use the same basis for each card.
- Does the cap limit spending, bonus rewards, or all rewards?
- Do several categories share one allowance?
- Does the allowance reset by calendar month or statement cycle?
- Is registration required, and how is the category determined?
Reconcile the result against your statement
Use an estimate for planning and the statement for confirmation. Record purchase amounts, posting dates, credited points, and bonus crediting; recalculate net spending after a refund. A pending bonus is not a transferable balance. Once rewards arrive, apply the minimum conversion block to calculate the miles you can use.
- Keep the applicable terms and registration confirmation
- Reconcile base and bonus rewards separately
- Update the blended HK$ per mile using credited rewards
- Show annual and transfer fees alongside the calculation
