Shenzhen is close to Hong Kong, but its destinations are spread out. Luohu shopping, central Futian, and Nanshan's coast need different plans.
Before you go
Getting your bearings
Luohu, Futian, and Nanshan are useful planning areas, with distinct crossings and access arrangements. Use exact crossing and station names.
Choosing transport and a base
- Map destinations before comparing appropriate crossings.
- Check crossing access and choose manageable connections.
- Check metro stop, exit, and payment method after arrival.
- Allow for return clearance; mall hours are not border hours.
Practical local notes
Futian Checkpoint and Futian Railway Station differ, as do Shenzhen North and Shenzhen Railway Station.
Check the return journey before adding a distant stop.
Choosing a useful base
A Nanshan hotel may not suit a Luohu shopping trip, while a bay visit should not be based in Luohu solely because it feels closer to Hong Kong. In Futian, choose around the particular mall or museum. Compare crossing-to-hotel, hotel-to-destination, and return journeys together. A nearby metro stop still requires checking the exit, lifts, and the actual hotel entrance.
Choose the day's district before the crossing.
