Before you start
MGTO lists Outer Harbour and Taipa terminals for Hong Kong ferry travel; the HZMB Hong Kong–Macao shuttle arrives at Macao Port, separately from the Zhuhai route. Permanent residents should check the applicable permanent-HKID route, while non-permanent residents need passport or Document-of-Identity arrangements assessed against their circumstances. An ordinary HKID alone should not be assumed sufficient. Routing through Zhuhai or Hengqin adds mainland entry requirements as well as Macao's.
What to do, step by step
- For a peninsula base, compare Outer Harbour and the bridge's final leg; for Taipa or Cotai, compare Taipa terminal and the bridge. Ask the hotel about shuttle pickup, hours and eligibility.
- Check entry documents, validity and stay conditions for each person, including children. Automated-channel registration is separate from entry entitlement; one companion's card access does not establish the group's access.
- Use tourism and operator channels to check bookable travel, luggage and change terms. Confirm the Macao arrival terminal on a ferry ticket rather than looking only at Hong Kong departure time.
- Choose the return terminal or port before scheduling luggage collection and access. A Zhuhai side trip additionally needs mainland documents and Macao re-entry checks, rather than simply extending the Macao itinerary.
Costs, timing, and things to check
The joint-inspection permit arrangements added in August 2026 apply to specified channels and required registrations. They do not establish that a Mainland Travel Permit replaces all documents at every crossing.
An open bridge port does not guarantee overnight hotel transfers or Hong Kong transport home. If seas disrupt a ferry, check an actually available bridge alternative and its cost; do not assume the ferry ticket transfers to a bus.
A practical example
A family staying in Cotai compares Taipa and bridge connections. A planned Hengqin second day requires everyone's mainland document checks beforehand, avoiding a discovery at the hotel that one person cannot join.
