Recent renaming means an older guide's Huizhou South may refer to today's Huiyang. Match the hotel, attraction and current station on one map before booking.
What to have ready
Before you start
MTR's current destinations distinguish Huizhou North, Huizhou South, Huiyang, Huidong and Huidong South. Huizhou's official introduction explains that the former Huizhou South became Huiyang in 2023, distinct from the newer Guangzhou–Shanwei railway's Huizhou South; the former Huidong became Huidong South. Huicheng's West Lake, Huiyang's Danshui and the Huidong coast are not a single walkable arrival area. Even a correct name still needs an onward connection.
What to do, step by step
- For West Lake, compare access to Huicheng; for Huiyang family visits, locate the exact estate; for a coastal stay, obtain the full hotel address. Do not choose solely by the shortest train ride from Hong Kong.
- Search candidate stations for the actual date, retaining full names, dates and train numbers. Update old booking notes or navigation favourites labelled Huizhou South or Huidong rather than reusing them blindly.
- Confirm the road route, pickup point and evening arrangements with the hotel or family using the booked station. Coastal-weekend traffic and distant mountain areas make last-minute vehicles a fragile connection.
- Confirm return availability and station access before scheduling the final coast or mountain outing. Include toilets and rest stops for older travellers or children instead of estimating solely from kilometres.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Match the rail document to the booking and check entry rights separately by nationality and Hong Kong status. A ferry, coach or different railway alternative does not automatically accept the original train ticket.
Beaches, hot springs and rural hotels have specific access and transfers; photographs do not establish current admission or suitable weather. In heavy rain or typhoon forecasts, prioritise the return and cancellation arrangements and reduce distant outings.
A practical example
A friend shares a 2022 'Huizhou South' hotel route. Before buying a 2026 South ticket, establish whether they meant today's Huiyang, avoiding arrival at a different railway station and a completely revised transfer.
Locate the destination, update old station names, then choose a workable complete journey.
