Islands district comprises multiple islands and Lantau communities. Tung Chung and northern Lantau have frequent transport links; Mui Wo, Tai O, Ngong Ping and southern Lantau involve hills and coast; Cheung Chau, Lamma, Peng Chau and Po Toi require ferry planning. Island names and district boundaries differ: Ma Wan, for example, belongs to Tsuen Wan.
Before you go
One island per day, with Lantau divided into manageable areas
- Tung Chung, Ngong Ping, Tai O and southern Lantau: shopping, religious sites, a fishing village, Mui Wo and beaches are different destinations. Count Lantau's road and hill connections realistically. The Ngong Ping cable car has maintenance, weather and booking arrangements, so it should not be assumed available as an automatic link in every itinerary.
- Cheung Chau, Peng Chau and Lamma: Cheung Chau offers temples, a fishing harbour and beaches; Peng Chau suits compact village streets; Lamma's Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan can be separate visits or a prepared cross-island walk. Different pier routes are not interchangeable, so check where the intended ferry actually arrives and departs.
- Po Toi and more distant coasts: natural scenery and rock carvings suit a prepared outdoor day, with supplies, shade and departures checked in advance. Not every island has frequent daily services, and not every shoreline provides a safe visitor landing. These visits need a stronger return plan than a casual harbour neighbourhood walk.
Fishing communities, religious places and island meals
Tai O's stilt houses, Cheung Chau's temples, Peng Chau's streets and Lamma's fishing communities remain lived-in places; distinguish tours, exhibitions and homes. Agree seafood weight, cooking charges and the total bill, and inspect portions and hygiene for island snacks. Cheung Chau's Jiao Festival and Tai O's dragon-boat water parade are scheduled traditions, not daily performances. Festival sailings and crowds may need special planning. At Ngong Ping, choose religious visits and the Buddha approach around opening and physical ability. For rain, use Tung Chung shopping or a confirmed indoor cultural venue; a smaller island does not guarantee a large mall alternative.
An unhurried Cheung Chau or Tai O day
For Cheung Chau, take a morning ferry, have harbour breakfast, visit temple and village streets, then lunch and choose a beach or short path. Reserve time to return to the pier and queue rather than completing a full island circuit. For Tai O, connect from Tung Chung or another suitable base, focus on village culture, have lunch and a short walk before returning; Ngong Ping can be another day. A Lamma cross-island walk needs direction, water and the final ferry decided first. Peng Chau suits a shorter outing. Avoid visiting three islands in one day and spending most of it at piers.
Arrival, connections, and the journey home
Tung Chung station anchors northern Lantau, while other Lantau destinations use formal bus, ferry or onward services. Confirm the Central pier and route separately for Cheung Chau, Mui Wo, Peng Chau and Lamma. Ordinary and fast ferries, and weekday and holiday services, can differ. The Transport Department lists licensed services; consult the operator's latest notices before departure. Check the last return, cancellation arrangements and bicycle conditions in advance, and allow time to find the correct pier rather than arriving only at the advertised departure moment.
Ferry margins, steps and coastal safety
Village paths, steps, sand and ferry boarding may be difficult for wheelchairs or pushchairs; ask operators and venues about actual assistance. Choose short routes for children and older relatives, with a shaded restaurant break near midday. Check LCSD lifeguards and flags at managed beaches, and stay out of water around fish rafts, ferry piers and unfamiliar rocky shores. Wind, swell or thunderstorms can change sailings and activities, so maintain a return margin and phone charge. Carry food and water for walking, take litter home and avoid unlit island shortcuts while rushing for the last ferry.
Give each island its own day, with ferry margins and rest built into the plan.
