The Museum of History lets families discuss Hong Kong life through objects from different periods. Hong Kong Story reopened from 1 April 2026, so replace older renovation notices or gallery maps before planning.
Before you go
Confirm the exhibition after its reopening
The official Hong Kong Story page lists the exhibition from 1 April 2026 with free admission and recommends allowing at least two hours. Read the new floor plan, introduction and current notices instead of relying on pre-2020 room numbers or renovation reports. The exhibition uses four core chapters in the museum's current narrative. If a particular former exhibit matters to your visit, ask whether it is displayed rather than promising an old reconstructed scene. Hong Kong Story, other galleries and special activities have separate information. Choose one exhibition as the main outing, adding another only if energy remains. For an everyday-life interest, identify relevant areas on the new map and follow on-site directions.
Distinguish an object, a reconstruction and interpretation
Begin with three questions: is this an original object, does its label identify a date and origin, and what elements of the surrounding scene are reconstructed? Record the object's name before reading the interpretation, distinguishing details you can see from the explanation offered. Give an older relative time to share a memory while recognising that one family's experience does not represent everyone in a period. Children can find an earlier everyday tool, compare its purpose with today's equivalent and identify which visible detail supports their idea. Treat a model or photograph as an exhibit unless interaction is expressly allowed. Follow gallery photography and recording signs, and ask companions before documenting their stories.
Separate audio guidance from on-site tour places
The exhibition offers Cantonese, Putonghua and English audio guidance through visitors' smart devices and gallery QR codes. Bring headphones and set the volume without playing audio aloud. For a public guided tour, check the day's sessions and language; the exhibition page describes obtaining quota slips at the first-floor lobby service counter within the stated registration window. Places are first come, first served, so free exhibition admission does not guarantee a tour. If a session fills, use the audio guide or activity booklet instead of making the whole group wait. For school research, choose a question from the exhibition resources. The Resource Centre has its own appointment and opening conditions, separate from ordinary gallery access.
Distinguish the entrance from the neighbouring Science Museum
The address is 100 Chatham Road South, beside the Science Museum. Save the museum's full name and entrance rather than a vague Tsim Sha Tsui museum pin. The approach from a station or bus stop still involves walking and crossings; wheelchair or stroller users should check barrier-free facilities and the suitable entrance. Tuesdays normally close with a public-holiday exception, and weekend or festive arrangements need another look before travelling. Free Hong Kong Story admission does not establish identical terms for every other exhibition or activity. Check any addition's official page and budget travel, lunch and separate programmes independently. Neighbouring museums do not have to be completed in one day; plan a seated break after sustained gallery viewing.
Worked example: an everyday-object route for three generations
Grandparents, parents and a child can choose three objects connected with clothing, food or transport, spending a few minutes on each label and detail before hearing a family memory. If another area interests the child, drop the last object rather than turning the exhibition into a test. Adult friends can compare photographs, maps and artefacts from one period, then follow the museum's further reading afterwards. In crowded galleries, move to a quieter permitted spot instead of holding a family discussion across a corridor. Before leaving, each person can name a discovery and an issue still worth checking. A short public-street walk after a meal is optional; more distant museums can wait for another visit.
Use the reopened exhibition's information, study evidence through three objects and plan audio and guided tours separately.
