Check the actual operator and route for every leg from home to destination. A pet-friendly venue does not automatically resolve transport restrictions.
What to have ready
Before you start
MTR's continuing Light Rail carrying-pass scheme operates on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Each fare-paying passenger may carry one eligible dog or cat under its conditions. The pet pass does not replace the passenger fare or extend the scheme to heavy rail, MTR buses or ferries. Large, fighting and known dangerous dogs are excluded. Dogs must meet licensing, rabies and MTR's published AVID-microchip conditions; an informal statement that the dog has been vaccinated is insufficient.
What to do, step by step
- Check the travel date and every transfer first. For Light Rail, use MTR's member and app process to obtain the current month's pass and display the valid record in My Collections. Screenshots or printouts are not valid substitutes; test app access before reaching the stop.
- Measure the fully enclosed, ventilated carrier, bag or backpack. Total length, width and height must not exceed 170 cm and no side may exceed 130 cm. The animal must be able to stand, turn and lie down, with no body part protruding outside the enclosure.
- Do not substitute a pet stroller, wheelchair, trolley or shopping cart for the permitted carrier under this scheme. Board through the last door into the designated rear area as directed by the conditions, keeping the carrier off seats and clear of passageways throughout the journey.
- Carry licensing and required evidence and verify acceptance, reservations and carrier requirements with connecting operators. If any leg remains unconfirmed, choose a complete accepted route or dependable care arrangements. Do not reach a station and rely on staff making an exception to resolve the missing connection.
Costs, timing, and things to check
Some legally imported dogs can use the specified ISO microchip under rules revised in August 2025, while MTR's published pass conditions still refer to AVID. Owners of ISO-only dogs should ask MTR about eligibility before purchase; compliant import documentation does not itself establish transport acceptance.
The monthly pass has validity, non-refund and non-transfer conditions. A separate special-event arrangement may apply only on its specified date and capacity. Distinguish the continuing scheme from an expired one-day event rather than treating event publicity as ordinary network-wide access.
A practical example
A Tin Shui Wai owner measures the carrier and obtains the month's Light Rail pass for Sunday, then checks the walking connection. If another railway is required, they revise the route first rather than presenting the Light Rail pet pass at an unrelated gate.
Confirm each transport leg and separately satisfy pass, carrier and passenger-fare conditions.
